Burning Oil, Copmression good HELP!
Searched but never really found the same problem that i have. My car burns oil....a lot of oil between 1-2 quarts in about a week and a half. My compression is between 239 and 241 all the way across, and all the plugs look fine but the #3 cylinder it looks really lean for some reason. Im running the kenji p28 and it runs very rich and sometimes idles like crap. Ive contacted a few people off here about their stock ecu's but havent had the money lately to purchase one/get reprogrammed for immobilizer/ect. any suggestions? Im running Castrol gtx 10 w30, up from 10w 30 to try to slow down the consumption. Piston rings are fine? I guess? motor only has around 65-70k on it from whate the cluster says. Im the 5th owner and used cars cant talk. Please help me.
first, actually, used acura's can talk. Take the R to your local dealer and get them to run the service history on the Vin, might make you puke like it did with me to find out how poorly mine was abused before she came home with me. Next, do a leakdown test, it will tell you how the rings are. might be bad rings. Then, if you are running lean in a cylinder, you might have an injector issue, best bet is find replacements, or send yours to RC and have em serviced for 20$ a piece. Also, find some cash and tune that ecu for the car, it will make a world of difference.
it was in at acura for "misc. wiring" but other than that nothing they know of...i think the wiring was repairing the wires from a vafc from as far as i can tell. Ill try the leakdown test, and i think i may have a set of injectors laying around....240's right? How would i go about tuning a chipped p28? Dyno run then burn a new chip? Thanks.
Sounds like piston oil rings, fairly common problem and discussed many times on this forum. Need a rebuild most likely to cure. You can always check you PCV valve too and make sure it's not clogged as a first step, probably a good maintenance item anyway, but R's tend to burn oil with more miles. Yours sounds a little excessive, so check replace that PCV valve and see what happens.

How many miles are you driving in that week and a half?

its my daily driver so around 300-500 in about 9 days. I stay below 5k most of the time except for getting on the interstate and such. If i need a rebuild any suggestions? do you think it is as major as bore and new bearings or do you think i might be able to get away with just new rings and maybe std. ctr pistons?
Im looking for daily driven reliability, and maybe some autox/quarter mile/ local circle track.
Ill go grab a pcv valve tomorrow and if it works i guess you just saved me a few hundred bucks. thanks for the posts guys.

i burned 5L 5w40 engine oil....within 5k km!!!
however, i do quite a lot autox and back road driving within these 5k km...
hopefully the piston rings won't die on me so soon

Whoa! 5th owner.
I'm actually one of the former owners of that car if it's a 2000 FBP. When I had it about two years ago, the oil consumption wasn't that bad, but I figured it was common. It saw about five autocrosses, no track, and no "mad stReet racing".
I believe I was the third owner and I know for a fact that the kid that had it before me was for lack of a better term, a jackass. He failed to follow through on several parts that were owed to me at the time of purchase.
After owning it for about a year I sold it to my good friend in Wilmington who is a former tech.
good luck,
Matt in Raleigh

Try using Motul 8100 or 300V.
Motul Cured my CaR, might do yours too.
I wouldn`t use non synthetic oil like castrol GTX in my caR.
If it Motul didn`t help, then I guess a rebuilt would be a good idea.
Good luck

How did it cure it? How much did the consumption change?
The reason I ask it that it sounds like good stuff.

my ITR used to burn around 3.5 liters of Mobil 1 ( 15-W50)oil in a three hour road race.( 12 laps --- 5 KM/lap -- 3 times\\)= around 150 km
using motul 8100 , this amount has been reduced to 1 liter.
Try it , u might like it.
I am sticking with it/

Wow! You're saying you burn a quart of Motul oil in 100 miles on the track? My car burns less than half that amount of Mobil 1 5W30.
Try Mobil 1, but in the 5W30 viscosity. You might like it. It might burn less oil for you than Motul.

I ve tried all kinds of viscosities and brands, none works as good as motul for me.
Maybe my R likes French motul better than the other brands, It runs happier and smoother now.

if it is the piston rings getting weak,
i don't think the motul 8100 or 300V would help...
since i actually burned 5 L 5w40 motul 300V...
(that's lots of money for engine oil man...
)

yeah i think im going to purchase a headgasket and some total seal rings and just tear it down and replace them, that way i know whats in there. i think the motul oil is thicker right? almost like a 20w50? If i get the new rings in there and the problem doesnt stop then i have no clue what the problem is. i figure i can reuse the bearings that are in there right? and just change out the rings.i can probably knock it out one saturday, im pretty knowledgeable when it comes to hondas, ive just never seen this problem and i dont know where to start. also someone suggested putting about 1 oz of oil in eeach cylinder to try to reseat the rings that are already in there. any opinions on that?
damn motul is expensive!!!!!
$10 plus shipping per quart!!!

u can't just change the rings and put the head back on it. as soon as you take the head out , it has to be resurfaces as the build up stresses in the material would actually release and warp the head ever slightly. I have seen lots people doing it and getting to oil leaking problrm as head wouldn't sit flat on the block after removal.
I would do it right especially if u track the car often.
any ways, Good luck

thanks for the heads up. i talked to a mechanic and he said to take out my dipstick and start it, and feel to see if there is a lot of pressure, and if not to replace the valve seals and see if it helps.
