anyone ever spray painted their shocks? getting agx's and i want to paint it flat black so they look stock.. dont want to see the red standing out. so has anyone done this? any pics? thanks..
The paint that many companies apply to their shocks isn't regular high-temp oven paint or anything, its usually anodized on, and 1 or 2 (in our case, 3) layers thick. Its done to protect the steel shock body from corrosion. Not sure if this can be done on your own, but then again maybe you can.
You can just rattle can paint them, it doesn't need to be heat paint. Just make sure that you don't get any paint overspray or masking tape residue on the chrome shocks rods or you will kill the seals. Sand or scuff them up the best you can then hit them with some primer and arattle can. It won't be as hard as the factory paint but it should be fine for you. I would not suggest powder coating a compete shock as the heat frocess coould be tough on the rubber seals. If the shcok was apart, that would be a different story but with the shock assembled then you are a bit limited in options.

ill go ahead and try that. i dont see why they gotta make their shocks stand out with that red. im suprised no one has really tried to do this. anyone else with any thoughts? thanks.
When I installed my new Koni Sports, I stripped, wire brushed, & clearcoated them. The results were fantastic. I used Rustoleums Clear Coat rattle can spray, on top of a couple coats of Bulldog adhesion promoter. If your painting over existing paint, lightly sand the old paint first. Just make sure you clean the surface to be painted with denatured alcohol before you start. Otherwise any oil/dirt will prevent the paint from getting the best possible bond to the surface.
And like CRX Lee said, always completely mask every portion thats not getting painted because you can easily ruin your shocks...
