so ive posted not long ago about how i wanted to paint my car..its just a few posts down..well guess what..i just got a 130$ ticket for making a right hand turn...so there goes all my paint money ect..my car deff needs some body work done and done soon..i dont want to have a bunch of primer spots all over my car..i mean i could just get some white paint and paint over it but that will even look worse.. im thinking off using rustoleum either in rattle can or in a quart like in the 50$ paint jobs.. what do u think my best bet is..rattle can or get the quart thin it and use a spray gun. i have a compressor and gun already so i think that would be my best bet. i am going to be painting it white. can i use clear coat? and wet sand and buff it too to get the best results? also i only need the paint job to last probly 3-4 yrs if that. i live in indiana and they salt the road (or say they say.i only see dirt) so hopfully that is not a problem. it does say on there web site that that paint resists salt so thats good..just wanted opinions and some questions answered..thanks guys

do this man prep ur car really good n if u use a can paint peice by peice so u wont get overspray....i use a spray gun but its a b mixing it.... heres a pix of my can work its sunrise red....wat u think?

i painted my car with rustoleum, and i think it came out amazing. Its all in the prep. But i used the quart. What i did was i bought the rustoleum, and i also went to Tractor supply and bought a little thing of enamel hardener, and for the reducer i used mineral spirits.

Wow those look clean. I was also wondering about using a hardener. Some people have said the paint is still "soft" in a few days so I thought about using a hardener. I wonder what would happen if you mixed a pearl with this kinda paint lol.

not sure, i mean its not a bad trial an error paint since its so cheap. And if the paint fades, a re-spray is cheap as well. But the hardener was a big help in the paint for me. It made is a little more durable for the couple days after paint. I still have to paint the trunk/ door jams, and the few spots that have been chipped away from the fender being to close to the hood, and the wipers hitting my hood, but all an all, it was a good paint for what i wanted.

paint was done with one quart of primer black from advanced auto and the hood was done with rattle cans from wal-mart and lots of painters tape

btw, don't worry. the eyelids are gone.

the hood, is a unique idea. And also good choice on the the getting rid of the eye lids

i spary canned mine with krylon "dries-in-ten-minutes" brand from wal mart.
took 3 hours including running back and forth to get more paint and taping everything off.
imo its a good $40 paint job.
and yeah, my hood doesnt match. i was bored, out of black, and need a new hood.

If you want something that'll last more than a year or two, go with urethane type paint. You can get the complete kit for primer, paint, and clear coat off ebay by TCP global for under $300. If you wanna go with the single stage, you might be able to get all these materials for a bit over $200. This type of paint will be just as great as the OEM paint and will last for years.

i did the rustoleum paint job with a spray gun, it came out pretty good but only reason i did it cause both my 1/4's had rust and one side was bashed in plus a bunch of other dents and dings, so i got to clean it up, make my car one color, and got some body work and paint practice, i didnt paint my jams and so on cause you have to sand all the rusto off b4 you use another paint, since im replacing 90% of my car's body panels in the next year i wont have much sanding, but just keep that in mind, and my paint isnt soft at all and its been through snow, alot of rain and bugs, still holding up great

and to add its great practice for cheap like $30 in paint it took a lil over 1 quart to paint the whole car with about 8 coats of paint, since i did it i feel real comfortable with stepping up to better paint next time, hope some of this helps

im sure this will outlast any rustoleum job and look better as well...hope this helps.

Oh yea, they also have that urethane single stage kit in black on ebay going for $64.99 so that's $15 more than the rustoleum job... We're assuming you want to reuse the original primer on the car as you would with the rustoleum job. Seriously, to repaint the vehicle the proper way, you'd have to sand ALL the rustoleum off.

hell, if you had to take it ALL off, theres a shop near me that does really low priced paint jobs, as in 300 dollars for a whole car, and they do a single stage prep where they use ajax and something else and sand your car with it, literally stripping it down.

Sanding a car with Ajax is NOT stripping it down...not even 'literally'. That is called scuffing or de-glossing the finish. A $300 paint job is a horrible idea on many levels. $300 just for materials to paint a whole car is a low budget.

Yeah i know its a bad idea, hence the 300 dollar price tag.
like i said though, ajax and SOMETHING ELSE. The paint is taken down to the factory primer in one stage. arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics, even of you win, you're still RETARDED.

1- Dont rattle can your car.
In the end it'll cost you more for cans then a quart of paint.
A gun will come out 1000 times better then a can.
With rattle can you dont have consistant pressure.

For example here's one that I did for a friend
The green EF was my first time painting a car ever,,,,


Those decals on the side is actually paint. Looks like the car was gunmetal color
then someone taped off the design and painted the silver....lets just say it look ALOT of wet sanding to get rid of the paint step.




Came out pretty good considering it started to POUR while i was doinging the final coat.


Then the next month I did another friends car...body was in bad shape, got a new front end.
Body and paint and motor and turbo where done in less than 5 days.LONG days






I used Rustoleum Satin green...prayed with a gun, first it had 3 coats, left it to cure then wetsanded everything smooth down to 1000, then did a final 2 or 3 coats and left it alone.
Cut the paint about 50.50 or more with acetone.

One thing I gatta say, Alkalyd Enamels completely SUCK!
Once you lay it down, the top surface or shell (for lack of words) will cure but the paint under takes a LONG time to "fully" cure...sometimes a month.
So all that while the paint stays "soft"


Since you have a gun I will HIGHLY recommend you get a single stage paint.
Pressure on the gun should be around 35.
Adjust your needle- you can put plain reducer in the can and adjust the fan size.
Try to get it to a really fine mist. the better the paint atomizes the easier it will be to lay it down and avoid drips.

I even saw Single stage Urethane paint at pep boys.


You can do whatever body work...little dents n such.

clean everything good, lay down a few coats of primer.
Wet sand that up to 800 or so.
clean it down again and start with paint.
you can put 2 or 3 coats, let cure and wet sand that again too if you want.
Then another 2 or 3 final coats after.

When everythings cured, can hit it with 1000,1500, and even 2000 git paper...wet sanding to get rid of any orange peel.
if it's your first time painting your gonna have orange peel.
Finish up with a polish that says "for 1500 grit scratches and finer"
then wait a few weeks and wax it.


AND get a realllly good respirator!
