Unless you own or work at a machine shop don't think it's going to be any cheaper.

yeah vw trannys are noo good for any amount of torque... If you are going to try a vw tranny try an dodge omni auto trans, they are strong and use the same bolt patern...

There is supposed to be a company that makes adaptor plates for vw tranny's to just about all the popular import motors. People seem to be using them in sand rails more often.

Not sure what the company is called.

how close ratio are you looking for? a b16 or type r with a jdm or maybe ATS final is pretty close. i cant see needing much more than a ATS final (they make a 5.1 FD) youd have to be shifting at like 11k to need more than that.

Thats because the real early omnis used a 1.7 litre VW engine. Later on they switched to the 2.2. Did they keep the same trans. with the 2.2?

there was some guy on http://www.PGMFI.org that got a b16 to spin the opposite direction and mated a VW tranny to it for a dune buggy or something. He was from some European country, he gave up on the project because the transmissions kept shitting out on him. I can't find the thread for it though it was pretty interesting.

Why in the world would he do that, you can simply flip the gears in a VW tranny to run backwards. We kit car guys do it all the time for 550 replica's. Plus you can build a pretty stout vw box if you know what you are doing. As long as you don't install the 5th gear kits.
