So here's the deal:

I have a motor with 10miles on it directly from Honda. It was one of Nikos' trainwrecked TSX motors. This is NOT a built motor, just stock from Honda.

I bougt the tranny separate so before mating the two together, I installed a new Competition Clutch with resurfaced oem flywheel.

Now, I need to break both the motor, AND the clutch in.

I've heard that it's best to run your car hard through the gears to break the motor in. Surely, that can't be good for breaking in the clutch.

What are your thoughts on this?

 

I would just drive like normal, and break it in like a new car. No full throttle starts, and take it through the rev range; just don't beat it.

drop the clutch and GO.....redline it and slam the gears....it is a myth that a clutch needs to be broke in....and you engine is already broken in!!!

The B18A1 engine and tranny I help rebuild for a friend, we treated the engine and tranny like a new car. We didn't beat the engine nor the tranny until after the first 1000 miles. Excessive hard driving will lead to premature wear.

 

So many contradicting opinions..

 

A clutch should be broken in
A motor doesn't really need to be broken in.
Check this, before a motor gets to the car, it is test driven etc, so essentially it is already broken in,
Driving it normal will let the piston rings seat better, than babying it.
A clutch should be driven normal the first few hundred miles, so just drive like normal no higher than 5k
for the first 1k

 

Can't go wrong with being easy on it, beat on it later

 

i agree with "chads" reply, it is only a myth about breaki nin your clutch. it will work the same whether you baby it or rev hard. and for the motor, just dont hit rev-limiter or rev over v-tec too hard until after a couple thousand miles. good luck

 

i would still go easy on it. the clutch probably only needs a few hundred miles, but i would give the motor more than that. drive it easy, no launching like woah, and slowly take it up through the rev range as already stated

 

You want the valvetran to set in good, if you over rev before it sets then youll have to do valve adjustments alot sooner then normal. The block isnt a big problem its more the head. So break it in for about 1000 miles or so. I heard 2000 but i think thats to long depending on your driving. 1000 stop and go, 2000 highway all the time.

For the clutch, if you put a clutch in and do a burn out before you leave the place it was put then the clutch will be bad. If you break it in and do a burn out it will last alot longer then the clutch that was freshly put in and will continue to go after you finish. Break in the clutch for atleast 500 miles (thats what i tell people, but really its up to you after 500 miles).

I had a guy come to me once for a new clutch. The clutch was totally destroyed, i asked what happened and he said it was a new clutch just NO BREAK IN! He got the clutch and start racing and doing burn outs and it was gone. So break in is very important so the springs in the clutch can set correctly.

Cliff notes: Break in the motor and clutch for atleast 1000 stop and go/2000 highway.
