why would a Ex be so slow
i have a stock 97 ex coupe:
when i first ran my car with a auto trans it went in the 19's down at the track now that i swaped it over to the 5 speed it still wont get outta tha 18 sec zone-- it feels like when i shift the motor cant keep up

Well even though the stock 1997 EX is slow, it should at least be in the 17 or even high 16 second range if everything is running right.
Sounds to me like you may have a problem that's slowing the car down even more than usual.
Are you running high 17's or low 17's? Exactly what times are you clicking off?

Ah, I had no idea a stock EX was supossed to be faster than that.
Any CELS? You said the car doesn't feel like it can keep up when you shift? What exactly are you experiencing? Stuttering? Hesitation?

not runnin past 18.o1-- it really dosent hesitate or do anything of that matter it just dosent pull its weight-- i think the motor is dead

i have si rims on the car now--- but Ricey i do need to check the routine maintenance on the car i got it 2 months ago from some young *** girl who just knows how to press the gas pedal

Sounds to me like there could be something fundamentally wrong (low compression, fried rings, etc) and that's why it just feels slow. Also, if your ignition components are all old and worn out, that can make a world of difference too.

Did you install a new clutch when you swapped in the 5-speed? If not then the clutch may be slipping, allowing power to slip away rather than hit the axles/wheels/ground.
Also what other accessories are on the car that can add weight? your times may be fine for the weight if it's got a booming stereo, etc.
Did you weigh the car?

I would take the car to a mechanic to get some maintenance done on it, such as cap and rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and possibly he could figure out what's wrong. Or, do the work yourself if you know how.

I think your times are a bit slow, but like others have said it could just be some reg mant items that have been over looked. Granted my D16Y8 isn't fast my any means but it doesn't feel bogged down or anything.

No bolt-on SOHC VTEC motor "pulls." Trust me. Unless you bolted a turbo onto it.

Come on now, "pulls" is totally subjective. I believe my SOHC non-VTEC "pulls" very well considering it ran dead even with my wife's old B16A2-swapped 1992 Si HB.

Plugs and wires can make a world of a difference. I just swapped mine after a year and it feels better.
Pull the valve cover off and see if there is any buildup in there. I had one motor, there was a lot of sludge buildup. My new motor w/ over 220k looks pristine.
You said you got the car from a young girl. My experience with most young girls is that they think that it'll run forever as long as there is gas in the tank. I'd get the motor maintenanced just like everyone else said.
