Default switch to synthetic oil?

If I want to switch over to synthetic oil, when previously have regular, what needs to be done more than a standard oil change? Do need any sort of hot oil flush to get any remaining regualr oil out? I was planning after switching the oil to change it about every 7500 miles. Any advice thanks.

I am going to do the same thing. I think you should drain the old oil, otherwise not synthetic and fill with sythetic, new filter and all and run it for a few days, drain, put in fresh then refill.

It would be cool to do that twice, and I think I am. But of course the cost is a factor. I think that would give your engine a chance to circulate out all the old oil. If it wasnt so $$ I would do it 2 or 3 times. Since I just bought my 02 I am going to get the auto tranny done with Royale Purple max syntheic tranny fluid, I hear this stuff is the best. With tranny you can get the flush then fill with the good stuff.

I also think you can get an engine flush, now that can cost you upward to $100 bucks from what I've seen. Just do the 2 change method, it will get rid of most the old non-synth. oil.

Hope this helps, because I am going to do this myself, and if you do this, do it yourself to save some cash.

Peace...

It's not really necessary to flush the motor. Just fill next time with synthetic and call it a day, unless for some reason you feel you just have to have 99% synthetic oil in there right away.

It either hit or miss. It depends on if your car is burning oil right now, and how many miles are on the engine.

my car, a 94 4 banger accord, has 190k. I switched over to full syn at 170k, with very little problems. the first 2 oil changes (done at 6k each) burned about 1/2 quart each. Then that problem just went away. Now I change my oil at 7k.

I would just watch the dipstick, and you will be fine. May even see a *slightly* better mpg!

btw, dont use fram oil filters. Even the supertechs from walmart are better. The purolator pluses are great too!

I agree with Philadd, doing it myself I may do it twice then take used oil to a recycler. Flushing is to $$$.

I am going to do it my Accord, just got it with 55k on odometer. Does K&N make oil filters? I know they make fuel filters. I want my ride to last, I financed it for 3 years, I want it to be in supremem shape if I sell it.

Peace...

True, especially if you want to get every ounce of value out of my car, in 3 years I may not sell it, if I do I can say hey in the 3 years I've owned it it has been taken care of. If I keep it then the car can give me 200k miles without losing a heartbeat.

The latter will probably be true.

be careful - synthetic oil is thinner than dino oil and with old and worn seals, it can sprang oil leak wherever old seals could not hold in syn oil. My tranny sprung leak after I switched to syn oil and I had to replace all seals. It will not happen every time but in some cases, it did. I think it really depends on the condition of the seals, age and mileage.

if your care has a lot of mileage. you can mix synthetic oil to introduce your engine to it. that is the safest bet. but ify our car is new with low miles, you can just switch to fully synthetic.

the car has 36xxx miles. So I guess I don't flush it then. Isn't a flush the same thing as if I put in synthetic run the car for say half hour then change it again? do I have to replace the filter as well?

Just do a regular oil and filter change like you normally would, but using the synthetic instead

do I have to replace the oil and filter with synthetic every 3000? I thought it was like 7500 if you are using a good brand of synthetic

The easiest way to afford synthetic oil I've found is buy a quart every other trip to wally world. What's that 2 qt's a week? 5-6 bucks a trip won't break you up when food is already 120 bucks/wk.

I just got my 94 with 88k and plan on switching to synthetic sometime over the weekend. I've got around 12qts of full synthetic in the basement now and just changed the jeep's oil this weekend.

Does honda recommend a blend or full synthetic? ifin's honda recommends a blend it's gonna have to wait a few weeks.

don't waste your time/money/oil by changing it twice. no big deal. i put full synthetic in my accord 1t 140k and its at 153k now with no problems. it likes the sysnthetic, seems to rev a little happier at high rpms now. with your new car, just go ahead and switch, you'll be fine.

synthetic oil is awesome... and your car with thank you... but just make sure you use a synthetic filter... i hear that a standard oil filter wont do the job.. i run moble 1 and the moble 1 filter... technically you can run your car 12,500 miles on syntectic oil, but the filter will need to be changed every 5 or 6.. so change the filter, add an extra quart of oil and calll it good..
