Y21 tranny - LSD yay or nay?
i got a B16A (JDM) engine which came w/ a Y21 tranny. my cousin keeps telling me that it has an LSD, but i cant tell, there is no markings on the tranny( or atleast i cant see them ). is this true? and yes i did a search, but dint find anything.
thanks
thanks
if the tranny is off...look inside the wholes where u put the axles in..if u see a lil shaft or rod then you DONT have LSD...if u dont see that shaft then u DO have it
jack the car up...put it on jack stands and spin one side of the wheel...if both spin in the same direction then u have LSD...if u spin the wheel and the other side is going in the other direction then no LSD

Wrong.
I have a brand new ITR LSD tranny in my Civic and the wheels spin opposite - the "wheel spin" trick is 100% false.
I have never seen an LSD-equipped car spin both wheels the same way - in gear or not.
the only way to know 100% if a trans has LSD is to pull an axle out and look through the diff - if you see a metal bar going diagonally through the diff then it is NOT an LSD diff. If you can see clear through to the other side (or if the other axle is in place, the other axle shaft) then it is an LSD diff.

thanks, its to late to do that now, the engine/tranny is already installed, but when it's time to change my axles, or tranny fluid i will definetly check.
once again, thanks for reply

A lot of times the "stamp" is shitty ink that easily washes off with the lightest of degreasers. My old ITR tranny had no stamp on it because when I pressure washed it the stamp came off.

A GM posi-trac differential will cause both wheels to spin the same direction when you turn one.
So it isn't 100% false, but it isn't accurate by any means.
The metal bar every one is talking about is called a pinion shaft. It goes in between the spider gears.

no not all LSDs are stamped and the wheels will spin the same direction but only when the car is in gear, not neutral. if you are still unsure then either a) jack the car up and turn it on then get in and act as if you are going to drive off... if both wheels are spinning then you have LSD or b) go to a parking lot, rev it up to about 7 grand and let it go

**** an A it's like fighting a losing battle. I could take a seemless video of my LSD-stamped ITR tranny case, then get a shot of my car in gear with the left wheel spinning opposite from the right one when turning a wheel by hand and people would still reply "jack the car up and spin a wheel..." stuff.
1. ON A HONDA LSD TRANNY IS DOES NOT MAKE ONE BIT OF DIFFERENCE WHICH WAY THE WHEELS SPIN WHILE THE CAR IS JACKED UP - IN GEAR OR NOT!!!
2. Drive the car in the air?! On jacks? also open-diff trannies will also spin both wheels. I need to video tape a customer's Accord or Legend with both wheels spinning up.
3. Are you kidding about revving to 7K and dumping the clutch? Do you not understand that even open diff'd cars can leave 2 black marks when you overload the diff by doing a burn-out? I can leave two black marks in my 1990 Civic with an open diff tranny if I rev the engine up and dump it.
I'm not trying to personally attack you, but posts like that are why so many people have misinformation around here.

***Update***
I just walked across our shop, jacked up one of my mechanic's Civic with an ITR trans, put the car in gear and in neutral and spun one wheel with my hands and here's what it did:
1st gear - wheels spun opposite of each other
Neutral - spun one wheel, the other did nothing.
I then did the exact same thing to a 1990 stock Integra next to it on another lift (trans. has an open differential) and guess what? It did the exact same!!! In gear the wheels spun opposite, in neutral one wheel spun while the other did nothing.
Does this prove anything?
Yes.
It proves that this technique cannot be used to determine if a trans has LSD or not.

Wrong.
99-00 Si coupes have the S4C tranny, ot the Y21.
Y21 is either a USDM OBD1 Del Sol VTEC tranny w/o LSD, or the JDM SiR tranny that some had the LSD in as an option.
Why post if you don't know guys? Really?
