N00b question: what year did VTEC start, and what models came with it? (sohc models pls)
thanks in advance. i'm looking for a vtec sohc 1.5L i'm wondering what year they started VTEC and what models it came in..........i think i heard somewhere that EX civics in 94 had vtec but the DX didnt, thats kinda what i'm wondering thanks again
Hey fellow MN'n. the only D15 with vtec is the JDM D15b, which is closeley tied to the USDM D16Z6.
What are you trying to do? and btw - vtec on sohcs is overrated.

i'm trying first to get rid of my 91' DX 4 door because i did a head swap on that and after scraping the 1/4" of carbon off the top of the pistons and having a clean head without the other 1/16" of carbon off that it has no compression and i figured that would happen anyways so i'm going to buy a newer civic.......i guess i will live without vtec, i just thought that some EX's had vtec, ah well. know anyone with a decent civic for sale, that doesnt have tons of miles on it?
Naw man alot of vtec out there, and they are good engines for sure.
D16Z6 92-95 EX/SI Best VTEC engine
D16Y8 96-00 EX Second, but has bearing issues not yet pin pointed
D16Y5 (96-00 HX? VTEC-E) not for performance btw
D15b (JDM) Sweet D15
and a few more I'm sure, EDM, JDM, USDM.
EDM has a D15Z6

I can't find anything in the tri state area that's worth a damn. i want a 92-2000 civic without a ton of dents or miles and i dont wanna pay alot (yeah we dont' live in a perfect world, that's why we have walgreens)
i almost bought a 94 hatch for 3k but the guy sold it after a few days of trying to get his price down (my fault really)
i found a 94 coupe with 109k for 3500 or best offer on carsoup maybe i'll check that out i know for sure i cant afford a Si or anything of value so i'm gonna roll a cheapie for the next few years till my insurance goes down so i can get a loan or something haha

1989 Integra first had vtec. NSX may have used it earlier than that.
Mercedes sold the system to Honda in the 70's.

for sohc it was in the 92 hatch's, vx (1.5) and si (1.6). other than that i believe it was first introduced in the 91 nsx (?) then in 92 in the first gsr (1.7).
