common failure for boosted STOCK b16a's
im have decided to go TURBO over NA on my stock b16a..my plan is to boost on a relatively stock b16. flame me if you would like but if im gonna blow a motor ide rather blow a motor i put 600 dollars into (price of stock longblock) than something i put thousands of dallars into building up seeing that im not planning on boosting anything over 10psi.
my question
what are common failures of stock boosted b16a's?
AND
what are relatively easy mods to do to the block without ripping it apart?
(stronger head studs/bolts, better headgasket?)

a blown motor's biggest downfalls are gnerally in it's owner/driver/tuner, etc. people skimping on engine managment is the weakest link, PERIOD. crappy fuel/spark managment has killed more stock motors than any one internal part. i dont think you'll find anyone that will disagree with my theory.
i wouldn't worry about the internals of your motor until you are 100% satisfied with your managment.
to answer your question, i dont think there aren't any "easy" internal mods you can do to your motor that aren't going to make it last an extra 10k miles or make an extra 50hp. it's my advice to get it running tip top, and just ride it out. chances are if the motor is running at its best, it's going to out-live your satisfaction with it's performance output.

Just wait until you WANT MORE! I have a internally stock B16A at 7 psi. It is fun and tuned w/ a wideband and the AEM. If you get it tuned very well and have the ignition system well kept, then you'll have no problem. Have fun, but bottom line is don't over boost, 10 psi is good, and get it tuned!

Boost as much as you want, just get it tuned well and go over 300hp with caution. The most common failure are the piston ringlands. Even if tuned perfectly those will eventualy wear out and break. The only solution to that is building a stronger end (impossible for your case). Tuning and how you drive it are the keys to success. Shoot for a HP below 300 and you'll be very happy. i have a stock b16 turbo .. in a del sol .. im putting down just over 300hp @14.7 and 277@11.7psi .. i have been running it boosted now for 3 months and the motor was beat to hell before i got it and still no problems .. i think the main thing would be (just like said above) tuning .. and then the ringlands will go eventually either way ..

runs fine considering you own it
i would say ringlands as well. i was gonna build my b16 but i skipped it and went to a 2.1 liter fully built ls/vtec

I found a ls block, head and tranny for 100 bucks... Im just gonna build the block and swap my b16 head on when I get finished.. Thats a good plan.. Have an extra block!

personally, i'd sell your afc, and go with one of the free ecu editing programs; you should pretty much be able to get completely setup off the cash you get from that afc.
considering how cheap you can get a decent uber/crome/TE setup going for, there's really no point in settling for anything with lesser capabilities.
if you have the cash to step up to a real EMS, by all means, GO FOR IT!!

Yes, i would say tuning is wheres its at. Just don't beat on it everyday and you should be fine for a good while. But if something gives out, it will most likely be the ringlands
most common failures iv seen is shitty engine management and boost creep. meaning instead of buying the parts that you really dont need for a stock boosted b16 such as after market fuel rail, regulater, intake manifold, baller exhaust manifold, electronic boost controller, fancey valve cover, and brand name "cat back" exhaust, autometer air/fuel gauge etc.. spend your money on a good tune. part throttle and wot. also a good wastegate is important. if you have those 2, keep the oil up to date, and monitor the appropriate aspects of the motor with a few gauges (that work) then you should have minimal problems.
Tuning! And not from any tuner!! From a reputable tuner! Get that bish tuned right, and boost will be a great companion!!! BTW..I just owned my first 05' GT stang today..Some guy in his 40s and his 30yr old GF. He was so amazed!! Off topic..but it was fun to mention.
