Might switch to turbo (from Toda "B" setup)
Hey all,
Well ... I'm not too happy with my current setup. I spent a lot of money and would like to have MUCH more power.
I basically have a poor-mans ITR motor with some better goodies (Toda "B" cams). The motor is basically maxed out except headwork and rebuilding the bottom end.
Well, I might throw down and get my bottom end redone. Get some 12:1 pistons, Eagle rods ... etc. Now, I have turbo in the back of my head.
I know that the Toda cams love compression. I just don't want to hit say 195'ish with the pistons and be dissappointed. I basically maxed out the motor.
Since I'm already rebuilding the bottom end ... dropping in some forged low compression pistons, Crower rods ... etc is not REALLy gonna add to my orginal cost. Just basically a different compression number and some other minor add ons.
I just don't want to stay NA and be dissappointed with the final results. I want a FAST car. PERIOD.
That's why I'm thinking about going turbo. Sell all of my n/a goodies and invest in a turbo kit.
I want this car to be VERY reliable. VERY. I will boost VERY low on the street 3-6 PSI and 12+ when racing/in the mood.
I don't know too much about turbos ... sent my afternoons reading about N/A engines.
I don't want a "beginner" setup. I want my engine have some *****. Remember, I will rebuild my bottom end ... so I can handle the boost.
Give me some opinions on a kick *** setup ... either a kit like the DragIII one or just go completely custom and get the best parts that I need for my application.
This is my only car ... so again ... RELIABLE.
My friend will do the install so installation error/poor installing will be eliminated. I also won't be boost crazy. Just some things to help with the reliabilty.
Thanks,
Adam

For a bolt-on kit, I'd look into either a Greddy GSR kit or an XS T3/T4 kit. Someone posted a dyno of a GSR w/ Greddy kit making 400+whp (tho, it was at about 20psi). I don't remember if it was posted on H-T or another board, but a lot of ppl say the Greddy TD-05H turbo "is too small" or "doesn't have potential"...so that just goes to show that it can push some serious power. and physically, the TD-05 isn't that much smaller than a T3/T4. I like the XS kits cuz they used Garrett turbos. I've known a couple of ppl, and met a few others online, that had some serious reliability issues with Turbonetics turbos (DRAG, RevHard, and Fmax all used turbonetics t3/t4 turbos, just with slightly different specs). I'm not saying that all turbonetics turbos are bad, but I think they're quality control could be better and if it were my money, and with the luck I normally have, I'd much rather just get something that will give me assurance the first time around, like getting ti retainers when you got your B's. If you really want some good power w/ either NA or FI, you should look into some head work. It can do a lot for an NA car, and even more on an FI car, but the methods of head porting for NA and FI are different, so you can do the head for FI and want to use it again later for NA and expect good results.
If you wanted to go custom, look into an IHI RX6 ball-bearing turbo, or if you got the funds, an HKS GT-series turbo. HTH.

greddy is weak. go with a drag 3, upgrade to 440 cc injectors w/ hondata 2b, tial wastegate upgrade, greddy profec B,and intank fuel pump. plus lots of dyno time...it will be perfect for what you are looking for.
