I do too. I guess I was being hopelessly optimistic about the automotive intelligence of some of our fellow honda owners.

sorry, I couldn't resist. If you are just swapping pistons you probably don't need to replace bearings. You probably just need new piston rings, which might come with the pistons...
edit: new rings usually imply at least a touch up hone. New gaskets etc. might also be nice...

I am no engine builder, but if it is piston rings he is thinking of: Wouldn't it be a bad idea to put new pistons & rings in w/o honing the sleeves? I have never tried this but lots of guys say they can't get rings to seat on worn cylinders. Wouldn't he want to put a fresh "cross hatch" on the cylinders?

im getting pistons wit rings but my mechanic was also saying that it would be a good idea to swap the bearings. Its a 94 motor so im trying to make it as fresh as possible
If that is what he said then he was referring to the rod bearings. He may have also lumped the main bearings (crank bearings) into that suggestion. Just sticking new pistons and rings in a tired block is asking for problems.
If you are after a "freshen up" of the bottom end you will want to look into:
New over-sized pistons with new rings
New head gasket
New main bearings
New rod bearings
New water pump
New oil pump
New timing belt
All new seals and gaskets for the bottom end
(Maybe more that I forgot to mention)
Bore and hone the cylinders to fit the new pistons and ensure proper seating of the rings.
And if you have the $$$ balance everything, micro-polish the crank, and have the whole block cleaned out.
If you are after a "freshen up" of the bottom end you will want to look into:
New over-sized pistons with new rings
New head gasket
New main bearings
New rod bearings
New water pump
New oil pump
New timing belt
All new seals and gaskets for the bottom end
(Maybe more that I forgot to mention)

The over sized pistons are for when you bore and hone the sleeves they will no longer be 81mm.
Get that oil pump and don't use the old one or you will be sorry later.
IMO - I would stick with an OEM 3 layer Honda head gasket.
The problem with buying bearings ahead of time is that if you want OEM (everyone has an opinion but mine is stick to OEM Honda) they come in various colors and thickness. You won't truly know what you need until you get the block "center line bored" through the mains polish the crank and mic everything. Now the last person suggested ACL brand which just come in 1 size and many guys use them. That decision is totally up to you.

Yea your right, im noting going to be totally sure whats going to be needed till they take it apart which is why im not ordering anything right now, im just doing my research on what i will need in the worst case and where to get it quick
