i want to install alarms as a job
doesn't hurt to take the MECP if for nothing else the knowledge you can gain studying from it (pretty much you'll learn basic formulas, learn about electronic components, how to mount units that are sensitive to that (GPS, etc)). There are three levels of MECP but getting the bronze atleast shows you have general knowledge in the field.
Also read online about how they work, check out sites of manufacturers and get familiar with how the units work.

I would recomment going to at least a community college and take an electronic course (2 year degree). Then think about MECP certification.
Reason being, if you decide install is not for you further into your career you wouldn't have wasted your time in school.

I install alarms on the side for $30 (friend discount)....$45 (others). Since most of the people I know have Honda's....it doesn't take that long to put one in. Roughly I'm making $20/hr since it usually take less than 2hrs installation time (including hiding wires/module and soldering).
