Is it even worth it?
This question crossed mind today and I can't stop thinking about it. I doing my swap in September when I get back to the states. I'm going B16 for starters in my 88 CRX Si. I never quite made up my mind about going LS/VTEC or poorman's Type R. Then I thought to myself: "Self: If your gonna build up the internals and turbo it a bit come next March, should I even bother with block swapping?" Turbos do make a great improvement in horse and torque as it is. I'm still contemplating but sime input would be greatly appreciated.
I know alot of people that went B16, mini-me swap, Frankenstein, and kept it stock with a turbo. The question you need to ask yourself is what do you want to do with the car, and how much money do you want to spend on it. If you want lots of high end and turbo go B16, it will cost serious cash to get it done right but your power and response gain will be worth it.
If you want to maintain a low cost alternative with high gains try the B20 with a turbo or supercharger. There is no Vtec (unless you add a B16 head ECU and harness, wouldn't that be fun) but it will give you more low end torque initially and the boost will help the lack of Vtec make better power at higher RPM. This can cost up to $1000 less than the B16 route. In the event you choose a supercharger, try the Jackson Racing as they make a KILLER B series Supercharger that boasts over 100 ft/lbs of torque gain and more HP than you can shake a stick at.
If you want to maintain a "stock" like appearance try a Mini-me swap. Keep that SOHC but bump it up to Vtec. You will still be able to use all the stock lowers and externals, but the top end, fuel and ECU goodies will get a serious update (lowest possible price, mind you). If you want to do a Turbo on the SOHC and get BIG power gains, try the PasswordJDM.com kit for your specific application.
As far as superchargers are concerned, I highly reccomend Jackson Racing. Vortech is WAY expensive, and they don't offer some of the adjustability and accessories that JR does. If you want a turbo for just about anything, well, use your best judgement because there are so many kits from various manufacturers that can handle D/B/H series for reasonable prices and reasonable quality.
