Which hood pins work the best?
Hey guys. I know that there are a lot of thieves that pull the hood release cable and then get into the bay and cut the alarm. So I guess as a theft deterrent I would like to know more about hood pins.
- Are they easily picked?
- When companies sell hood pins, do they use the same keys for all the hoods or are they all different.
- Is there any hood pin that doesn't stick out so much?
Well I guess the main question would be- when it comes to someone trying to jack your car, will the hood pins act as a good deterrent or is it a waste of time, hood, and money?

I heard that those hood locks (circle style key) can be picked with a Bic pen...
I've seen people use the hood PINS itself and just lock them with Master key locks.

Eh, you can cut those with a bolt cutter very easily. Are there no hood pins with a non-circular lock (more of a torx or wheel key type lock)?

Sorry guys, I was under the impression that hood pins and locks were the same thing... So I guess now the question is, which is more secure?

Move your hood cable from inside the fender to inside the engine bay, then wrap the latch mechanism with sheet metal. You should even move the hood release handle itself to slow them down even further.
I have a hood lock that I bought from the ricer section at pepboys. They're pretty cheap quality in that they will break if they're the only thing holding down your hood (I had a cf hood with no latch at one time). When it broke I bought another and the old key didn't fit it. They say they're unpickable, but like all things, I'm sure there's a way through it. If it slows them down and deters the amateur thieves then I'm happy. I have many layers of security behind it.

Thats funny how they advertise those and then have the ITR with hood pins instead.
Anyway i had those types, gave me alot of problems and there easy to break. Best thing ive seen was hood pins with master locks. Dont forget not matter what you do a theif could always tow your car and have all the time in the world.

but simply push down on the hood, and twist the actual lock.... voila, its off. once hit a huge dip in the road, jolted my hood, and one lock came off..
anybody have pix of the hood pins w/ master lock? sounds funky but its best than everything else here

I use Sparco hood pins...
They are cheap and effective. They are nothing fancy, they just hold the hood down. I like them because they are one piece, meaning, there is no part of the pin that can come off and get lost or stolen.
I don't like those CF hood locks because the "carbon fiber" looks really fake and cheap.

I bought the ones from HOODPINS.COM, and being a machinist they are pretty good quality

I know some people would say you can still open the hood easily...but I mounted them so you do not see them at all...
Basically invert them...Mount the "stick" part to the underside of the hood, and the recieving portion mount inside the engine bay and run a few cables so you can release it from inside the car

the dzus fasteners are nice but finding a way to mount the tabs are hard
here's what it looks like

Unlike regular hood locks in which you mount the actual bolt to the holes on the rad supprt (EK) or headlight (EG), the dzus tabs woudl require being welded where you want to mount the fasteners unless you can fab a way of mounting it.

Sparco doesn't stop someone from opening your hood. It doesn't sit flush either.
Your OEM hood latch doesn't stop someone from opening your hood, unless you reroute the cable and then hide the handle so they don't smash your window and pull it.
The DZUS look nice and flush, but can be turned with a screwdriver. Maybe use these to secure the hood, then use the Pepboys/ebay/summit hood lock to lock it down for you. And no they can't be picked with a bic pen, wrong diameter (and there are about four different diameters and key sets from what I've seen).
If you have the hood pins latched and you can still push the hood down, you need to tighten them or else it's going to bounce around when you're on the freeway. If they're tightened down properly I don't see how a thief could push the hood down even further. I've had hood locks installed in both a CF hood and a metal hood and you couldn't push it down further or somehow turn the inside of the locking mechanism.
I can't tell what that DEI thing is, but it's probably something similar to the OEM hood latch in function.
