Default Is it okay to run brake pads without shims?

I put my track pads on the car today, and instead of cleaning up the shims and reusing them, I just applied the anti-squeal to the back of the pads and put them on. Do the shims really do anything?

good question. Dunno the exact answer, but, the last two sets of aftermarket brake pads I used on my car would not fit with shims, the caliper would not fit over the pads with shims as they would be too tight. I called the manufacturer of the pads and they told me not to use the shims with their pads. So I have run without shims for one year now, including one day event, and a few visits to the 1/4 mile drag strip. I get a bit of squeal once and a while but very infrequently, really not bad at all. No other problems to report. I did use anti-squeal on the back of the pads.

Are we talking about the front or the rear brake pads?

I run my brake pad without shims and nothing went wrong......I've no choice but to remove them cuz the shims depart from the pad and touching the rotor.

Btw....I'm using Hawk HP+

WhosITR-----will take them off and switch to R4S soon

Yes, shims are just there to reduce noise and vibration...they do not affect performance.

For race applications, we don't ship shims with our pads. Unless you have unbearable squealing, then you don't have to bother with the shims.
