91' Accord EX short ram air intake... and computer reset?!
Hi Guys,
This forums has offered a lot of useful information for me and my honda. But I haven't found too much information on the install of a short ram air intake. I know this is a fairly simple job but I don't want to mess things up. Are both hoses hooked to something? It did look like there were two hoses already connected to stuff this morning. Also, I was wondering about reseting the computer. Do I need to reset the computer after installing the intake? If so, how is the best way of letting the car get new settings? (Should I let it idle with all the fans and lights on?) And is there anything else I should know or watch out for?
Thanks,
Dave

i just installed a CAI last weekedn on my 96 accord..
its pretty simple really, my friend and I did it in the blazing sun in about an hour..and now that I've done it I could do it in about 15-20 mins, maybe less..
im not certian about your car but i woudl think its all about the same. there were 2 lines that were connected, vacuum lines, one plugged into my intake and the other one I plugged w/a screw I saw laying on the floor
didnt have to reset the puter or anything so no worries there. just make sure you dont unhook anything else when your taking the stock stuff off.. i didnt realise how much crap honda used in the freakin intake system.
oh, and enjoy your nice new sound your cars gonna make

my intake took about 35minutes to do, only b/c my friend and i have both put on damn near a dozen
resetting the computer(ECU?).....that's not necessary but I have found as im sure some others here may know, that you can "re-program" the cars driving features. i was able to feel and so was my friend a differnce after doing the following:
1. Disonnect battery terminals
2. Let car sit uncharged over night or better yet 24hours(clear the ECU)
3. Reconnect the terminals
4. Start up the car let the "bells" go off and wait til you dont hear your fuel-pump anymore, then go for a ride.
5. Drive the car for about 20minutes real hard(i.e quick shifting, 1/2-WOT and high-shifting).
A guy at a local dealership told us that this "re-calibrates the computers fuel and air delivery diagnostics for better timing and more effieceny" or sometihng along those lines
we did it a while back, but hey, its free and doesnt do any damage so...

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. The instructions from the intake say to leave the terminals disconnected for 5 minutes the reconnect.... let the car idle for 5 mins with high beams, and fan on full (a/c if available) then take the car out for a nice hard drive.
Wow....honestly, none of that stuff is necessary. Just make sure you've got your keycode if you have a factory radio, and then just disconnect your battery (or the ECU fuse, if you know which one it is) wait about 10 seconds and re-connect it. You certainly don't have to do that over-night song and dance.
It's not necessary to reset the ECU at all......but it is a good idea to, so that the computer will adjust for the new changes in air flow etc. It does it on the fly, instantly, so you don't have to drive around to "re-train" your computer! LOL
I think the mechanic was messing with you when he told you that, for real!

resetting the ecu is a good thing to do so you car detects the new part quicker than having to wait....
1)disconnect battery for 5 mins....
2)reconnect......
3)start car and turn OFF everything ect..
4) now when you start the car... dont touch it.. just leave it iddling alone untill you hear the cooling fan start up.. (if you already had the car running let it run for 5 mins.. ).. dont rev it or anything...
6) after a few mins and NOT REVVING turn the car off.. now its reset....
you should do this its just like after installing sumthign on your computer you want to restart it so it runs with the proper settings

whatever you say guys. That's not what I was taught. All you have to do is reset the ECU, and you're good to go. The ECU has a flash ROM memory.....when you cut the power to it for a few seconds, the flash ROM gets erased. Resetting it forces it to forget it's previous program with the stock equipment. Then computer will work it out from there.....you don't need to do all of that dogmatic crap.
Maybe to help the ECU learn the new program, you should put on a somberro and a tu-tu and dance around in front of the car?

haha its not song and dance... you turn off the ac head lights and radio so the computer only readys what the engine need alone not with accesorys.. iits done for a reason.... its just like when you start you car cold.. you let it warm up... you dont just start it and run the **** out of it.. i duno maybe you do.. but your supposed to warm it up.. its all just so it get sa better reading... go ahead and do what you like... im not saying your wrong or im right i guess its up to who ever prefrence on how they wanna do it.. ive just been told by numourus ppl that this is the correct way to do it.. not just from myself but from others.. and it says to do it with the instructions..

This is a 1991 Honda PGM FI ... an 8 bit microcomputer that doesn't have plug and play features... it is programed with upper and lower values for each sensor and makes ajustments to the fuel injection, spark timing etc. the computer doesn't detect any part only gets a reading from it to do it's job... if the reading is not there or out of tolerence you'll get the check engine light. As far as I know you can't change the program or chip these computers... but I could be wrong on that?

Hi,
Well I got er' on the other night and it went really well. It only took about twenty minutes but it looks and sounds good
I did disconnect the negative terminal to the battery for five minutes, then I drove the snot out of the car for about twenty minutes. Now, whether or not it does something or helps the car I'm not sure; but it was damn fun
