TIP: never weld or grind within 5 feet of glass
while shaving my antenna, i recently learned not to weld near glass. i didnt think just two spot welds would hurt, but the slag burnt tiny holes into my windshield and driver's side glass. I was also grinding some of my hood today, no where near the windshield, and now there are all kinds of divits in the windshield that look like crap. Fortunatly, i cracked the windshield a couple weeks ago and am replacing it anyways, but a good lesson was learned.
when i was grinding the sparks, i thought I was no where near the windshield but i was wrong. so be careful.

Your lucky thats all that happened. When I was welding the holes for my spoiler on my 95 Teg. A piece of metal hit the back window, it sounded like a gun shot went off and the window shattered. I went to glass place in town and they wanted $2500 bucks for a new back window. I just went to the junkyard and got a new hatch for $250 in the end though.
You want to buy what is called a "welding blanket"!
If you pick one up at a welding supply shop, be ready for the price! (however, still less then a new windshield)
They also sell them out of Harbor Freight, but I don't know about the quality.
If this is totally a one time thing, see if you can borrow one from a welding shop.
