Do I need a new axle or just a new CV boot?
I have a torn CV boot on the front driver's side.... I don't know how long it's been torn, but there's grease all over. I can hear a quiet grinding noise when I let off the gas and when I turn sharply, but thats pretty much the only time I can hear it. Do I just need a new boot? or do I have to buy a whole new axle with both inner and outer joints? I had it quoted.... $200 for a new boot, installed (sounds really high) and $230 for the new axle, installed.
$200 is way too much for replacing a boot since they usually only cost between $20-$40. They are probably charging for their time. You will most likely need a
new axle since there is grinding. As a general rule if you can catch the problem
early enough you can just replace the boot, but if it starts grinding it is probably
dried up and causing friction or water has gotten into there and started to
rust it out. Go with the new axle. Price them out first and see what a good deal
would be or try to find one here
Sorry so long.

I just had the same problem, the best way is to buy the parts at advanced auto parts or autozone for 140 (core charge of 70) for the whole axle, thats if you just want the standard axle, nothing of the high performance stuff. I wouldnt buy the boots now that you have grinding or clicking in the turns. I replaced both sides because both boots were ripped in half so for good measure check the other side. This is all under the assumption that you can do this yourself. If you cant and you go to a mechanic then be prepared to spend a pretty penny, i looked around and only found ppl that tried to scam me as a numb nut who just wants my car fixed. The best way is to do it yourself and here is a write up that is VERY useful: http://www.honda-acura.net/for...73647, good luck
