Well, technically the title should NOT be clean. In order for the motor to be legit, the VIN should come back as a totalled car. Carfax is a great way to verify salvage motor milage. The milage on the salvage title listed is the actual milage on the motor at the time it was removed from the donor car.

Actually, the more I think about it -

It could also be listed as a salvage title due to theft if the car was stolen, recovered, and then deemed a total loss depending on your state's DMV rules...
Some states may issue a theft recovery title, others may just issue a salvage title that makes no distiction between a theft totaled car and an accident totaled car.

But carfax is still a great way to verify the milage on the motor.

It should come up saying theft if it was stolen, safest way is get the VIN and ask your local police station to check it

if you give me the VIN, i can let you know the serial number of the engine.. but I can't do it the other way around.
sucks, because it would be nice to do a service inquiry by engine number.
