Ok everyone I need some help here.

My 2000 Civic Si needs a rebuild or a new engine. What's the best
path to take on this? I want to keep it stock, I don't even rev this engine
much. I am always shifting at 4k, no kidding. I am a mellow driver. Actually
I wish I had more low end, I could care less about that top end that I
never get to use.

Who can I trust to rebuild this engine right? I want it dependable!

Or

Where can I get another lower mileage engine like it in good shape?
I'm a little confused on what engine this actually is... B16a2? OBDII? But
when you look on ebay, all those motors are OBDI's right?

G</TD></TR></TABLE> there are just more obd1 engines out there... you might consider getting something else, like a b20 if your not gonna rev it that high

 

You have a B16A2, OBDII.

First question is, why are you rebuilding it? What is currently wrong with it?

 

You'r car comes with a b16a2. This is an OBD2 engine.

First, why do you need a rebuild?

Second, if you want an engine with alot of low end you dont want a honda. Our small displacement engines have to be revved high to make any power.

 

if your not going to rev your b16, might as well sell your car and get like a hx or something and have the ultimate daily driver that gets really good gas mileage...save money on insurance too... yeah also curious why you need your motor rebuilt .

 

Well, The car has 109k miles on it right now. I have noticed that it has been using some oil (quart I suppose) between oil changes. Well I decided to switch it over to Mobile1 synthetic oil last time. In about 1800 miles on that oil change, It consumed about 3 quarts of that oil! So I went and put some mobile high mileage oil in it and I can't tell where it's using any of it yet.
I know if I do take the RPM's up to the upper range of the gauge then I can physically see smoke behind the car. I have also had people tell me that they can see some smoke as I decelerate or slow down at times.

I have considered selling the car and getting something else. I just don't think I would be happy with a "normal" civic. I have considered getting a RSX (NOT the type S though) but I don't like some things about that car.

It's also aggrivating to me to have to put high octane fuel in this car, especially since gas is so high.

 

If you aren't worried about going fast or performance, have you considered selling your car and getting an economical car that gets the most gas mileage?

Have you pinpointed EXACTLY what the problem is? It definitely sounds like your rings are bad and probably some seals. It will be cheaper to do a rebuild rather than getting someone else's headache.

I recommend you send it to a shop to get it rebuilt. No need to buy a new engine when only the rings and a gasket kit is needed. For how long have you owned this car? (mileage)

 

You've never revved your motor beyond 4k? Sounds like your motor never got broken in properly so your rings never seated correctly. I have 107k and I'm above 4k longer than I'm below it. I consume maybe 1 quart every 5,000 miles using castrol 5w30. When you get your motor rebuilt, drive it like you stole it.

I agree. I have a 2000 Si as well. You should have fun with that motor once you rebuild it. Depending on the shop you go to it should cost around $1000, give or take.

Plus if you used convensional oil for 107K and then used synthetic, all the gunk that got into the seals are being washed out with the detergents in the synthetic oil. This is why you are smoking more.

 

I only got the car when it had 80k miles on it so I haven't had it that long. I'm very unsure how the previuos owner treated the car.

I will just have to check around somewhere here to see who is recommended for a rebuild on this type of engine.

For some reason I was thinking that it would cost alot more than $1000 to have this thing rebuilt, but that's not bad at all really.

Only 100k miles and it needs a rebuild??? Smoke out the exhaust pipe can mean many things. Try replacing basic stuff like fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, dizzy, rotor, injectors (at least get them cleaned), O2 sensor. Your Air/Fuel ratio is affected by all these and so is the smoke. Then after all this, check your compression. Change each component and observe the difference in performance. My smoke was gone after switching to 10W30 oil synthetic blend but still bogs a bit. I drive a '92 civic with 250k miles. I noticed an improvement with a Honda PCV valve after years of using cheaper 3rd party PCV valves. What does your spark plugs look like? My next change out will the spark plug wires.

 

What does the PCV valve do?

I "had" a bogging aroung 3000 rpms but I replaced my battery 4 days ago (battery had a dead cell and finally crapped out), and now I have NO BOGGING. Very strange.

 

you dont sound like a guy that wants to rebuild it your self so just pay a shop to rebuild it just like someone else said its better to rebuild than buy someone elses headaches that they are tring to get rid of just like you! rebuild and drive it like you stole it, lol!
