Default Autocross Tires

Car - 99 Honda Civic Si with 15x6.5 rims in STS.
Tire size wanted - 205/50/15

I want an autocross tire that will also be daily driven. Driving includes about 20 miles to school and 20 miles home. Mostly highway. Then an additional couple a miles a day for work and around town things.

I know that the Falken Azenis are the favorite but I am looking for something with a little higher treadwear rating, a little better in the rain, a little more practical for driving. I still might just get the Falkens but am seeing if there is anything else I should get? What would be the next best thing? How are yokohama parada specs? Kumho ecsta 711, or MX ? ect. Should I just get the Falkens? Does everyone hype up how bad they are in the rain and their wear? Thanks!

azenis 615, kumho MX, hankook z212 rs-2.

good wear and good a/x performance are pretty much mutually exclusive.

I ran (& slid in the rain) the "old" Azenis for 2+ years under those same conditions and they were great for the price and grip. I don't think they are available any longer unfortunately.

As for the Yoko's, I can say that I pretty much destroyed the corners of my front two fairly new ES 100's in one event, so don't buy those.

I hope this helps a little bit.

From the list up there, ive had azenis 215 and 615 and kumho 711s.

711 - ok for street but they are just crappy tires imo for autox.

215 - awesome autox tires and no problems whatsoever for the first half-life of treadwear. After the half-life they get really loud and treading water you have to be careful... really it's the puddles of water that can be a problem. Drive like a sane person and you should be ok.

615 - these tires are nowhere as wide as the 215s in the 205/50/15 form . so from that point of view they dont grip as well as the 215s imo. dont get me wrong they do still grip well for how wide they are. I road raced with them and they seemed to tolerate heat better (didn't get greasy like the 215s do). As for treading water, you can drive like a retard and it plows through standing water. sidewalls are softer so noise level is also better on the street.

the 711s? don't even bother.
215? a proven tire, but hard to find nowadays.
615? civicsiracer actually got more Gs out of them than the 215 so they are also a good choice.
z212? someone on here did back-to-back tests against the 215 and the times were lower with these. definately worth a look.
mx? never been much of a fan.
yokos? not at the same level as other in this group.

for ultimate grip i'd go with 615s or the z212. as far as wear goes?

I'm currently running the rt-615 daily on my 00 gsr. For wear, well, its difficult to tell how much of the wear is from the street, and how much is from auto-x and a track day I did. But, from current wear, they should last me a year (best guess). I can't speak of grip compared to those other tires, but they are night and day different than my stock xgt v4s. For daily comfort though, they are quite noticeably stiffer, even on a completely stock suspension. And for rain use, all tires will hydropane at a fast enough speed, so drive smart.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this month's Grassroots Motorsports Mag. They conducted a test of a pretty extensive list of both R-Compound and "STS/STX" street tires. From memory the 615s showed the best times of the street tires tested.

Maybe the Advan Neova? Definitely not the fastest in the dry, but I know someone who used them in the rain at Toledo and was pleasantly surprised.

All my sets of Azenis have lasted well over a year (about 10-15,000 miles) with about 30-40 autocrosses too before they were 0-1mm of tread left.

On the highway at 70mph in the rain they worked great until about 2-3mm of tread left. Which is normal for any street tire. If they start to hydroplane you just need to slow down *gasp!*

I ran 3 events so far on the newer Azenis and one event was just after a downpour and I was the fastest car there (Porsche Club) until someone got me by 1/2 second Mind you my car has 100hp and that Porsche had 2.5x more

Hey guys just an update. I am buying the tires with the rims as a package. The place I am buying them from JLB Motorsports who has the best prices ever) cant get the Rt215's since there discontinued. Also they dont have 205-50-15 on the z212's. I guess its the new 615's for me.

I really liked my old RE730's and RE750's (Bridgestone). I'm on RE010's now, which is a lot better, but RE750's have a better treadwear rating and cheaper. Their sidewalls are fairly stiff and when I auto-x'ed in them, it wasn't too bad at all. They did well in the rain, too.

*EDIT*

WOW. I didnt realize but the new RT-615s will cost more then my brand new rims. So I bought the z212's. Ill let you kbnow how they are when i get them!

Just an additional piece of info Im running Dunlop FM901's now. They have a treadwear of 200. How do they compare to some of the tires listed, just for comparison. I have not raced on them yet.
