ive got a 1993 honda del sol s, d15b7+manual trans with about 170,000 kilometers on it i wanna change the tranny fluid as shifting has gotten lesss smooth in the past 20,000km, how many quarts/litres and whats the best fluid to use? gm syncro or honda MTF? anyone got a good write up on how to go about draining and refilling my tranny!! thanks

its like 1.8 so just get 2 bottles, i put all of it in

 

I would use Honda MTF, it will take about 2 quarts. The drain bolt is on the passenger side right below the axle and it just takes a 3/8 drive ratchet. The fill bolt is towards the rear of the car on the same side of the tranny as the drain bolt and is a 17mm. Just fill it until fluid starts leaking out the fill bolt hole.

 

96ej, thanks exactly how many litres in a quart?????? whats a quart lol...also the tranny takes 1.8litres??? what do u think about just using top grade 5w30 engine oil??

1L = 1.05 Quarts (according to my Mt. Dew bottle) Sorry, Damn standard units of measuring

Any good motor oil of the proper weight will work, but honda sells MTF for a reason, that is what I would use.

 

yeah so 2 bottles of MTF will do me good then?? dealer said about 2.5 litres dunno why he also said for a 1993 5w30 is good dunno why..... hmmmmm? any other opinions

2 bottles should do the trick. That is strange that the dealer would reccomend 5w30 rather than MTF. They are basically the same but I think the MTF has more additives or somethning. :shrugs:

 

does anyone have a good DIY write up on changing the tranny fluid?? pics etc

 

back then 10w 30 was what they took. After Honda released it's new MTF it became retroactive to all trannies as a recommend. The old school guys still look at it as snake oil and go with motor oil...of course they work on grocery getters everyday. 10/30 will work but the MTF is far better, especially with your miles. I for one am not on the Synchromesh bandwagon and I anticipate these guys coming back with problems later. my .02

 

yeah, how many kilometres are in a mile? cus mines 170,000 kilometres, anyways earlier today i bought 3 litres of honda mtf it cost me about 20 dollars canadian. :S does anyone have a really good step by step guide on the exact steps (pics would help as well) to drain and refill my tranny fluid? :D thanks!

I agree with you 100%. Synchromesh is a band-aid for already messed up tranny's. If nothing is wrong with it, then Honda MTF is the way to go. Honda MTF even got rid of my rough shifting after my tranny swap. I changed it a month after that and it's been real smooth and shifts nice and clean .

I paid 18 bones for 3 liters. So that price is about right. I noticed you live in Vancouver. I actually live in Abbotsford. If you came over to my house I could show you. I have got tools and everything you need. I am going to replace my tranny fluid this weekend, because I grinded rev. again . I no theres gonna be metal shaving's in there .

 

take off the drain bolt i will post pics tomarrow when its light out....

then when its done draining what i like to do is take off the vehicle speed sensor.. makes it way easy.. pour a quart into the tranny to get the excess stuff out then when its done draining again put the drain plug back in and pour 2 quarts of honda mtf through the hole of the speed sensor... much easier than having to ge the funnel with a tube

Yeah, I got two tool boxes and a rolling chest full of tools. I know what he is talking about. I did that and much more when I swapped my Dx tranny for an Si. I even rebuilt the Si tranny before I put it in, so I am pretty good with a D series tranny by now. I am never to busy to help someone out. That and I am inbetween jobs right now so I have got lot's of extra time. If you want you can come over to my house and we can do it in 10min. The funnel and tube is still the best way to fill a tranny IMO.
