Icon6 What Tranny fluid for my del sol???

1995 del sol d15z6 .. My mechanic is a Honda specialist and hes telling me to get any 10w30 brand motor oil for use in my tranny. Should i trust what he says? Honda MTF is so damn expensive but is it worth it? i really want some input before i make my decision. I want to trust my mechanic because he did my tranny swap originally and all of my other various work done on my car. My haynes manual says Honda MTF but is that just honda trying to get my money for a product that equals much cheaper 10w30???? any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Back in Honda's OBD1 era, they used regular 10w30 in their transmissons. This was before they developed the current MTF.

I say no. I have used Penzoil Syncroesh for thousands of miles and notice no difference.

I also used 10w30 in my Y21 (OBD1 B16A) no difference.

This is just one man's account.

Honestly, redline mtl is by far the best tranny oil that I have used and I've owned Hondas for 10 years.it's well worth it.

Don't know, haven't tried it. Seems very thin.

This is not what Honda used orignionaly for the OBD1 Civics.

Thank you to all who posted. I previously was running 10w30 in my tranny. turns out my mechanic did the motor swap when my buddy owned the car before i had bought it from him. Ever since i have had the Del Sol reverse gear would sometimes grind a tad when cold unless i double clutched or put it in first gear and then reverse. Nevertheless Honda MTF is amazing and i shift smoother then ever and no more grind in reverse. There is really a major difference when the gear catches you can feel it doing what it was engineered to do. Honda MTF for life!
