D15B2
Obviously the D15B2 is not a highly modded engine. Atleast I haven't found much about it. I looked through the FAQ post and did a little searching other than that.
Well, I just got a 1990 Civic wagon, not the 4wd. though. It has the D15 B2 motor w/ an automatic transmission.
I have a few questions if any of you guys know the answers.
What is the timing for the car? We just replaced the distributor and my husband wants to time it. We have a Haynes and Chilton manual. Both manuals say that the timing specs are in the engine bay but we can't find them. Do ya'll know where the label is?
What engines, if any, are similar enough to mine that I can use their parts? Such as air intake, heads, etc... and which parts can I use?
Also, my tranny is shifting extremely hard. Is that normal and if not what can be done to fix it? And is there any manual tranny that will work w/ my motor?
Ok that's it.
I have a Dodge Avenger that I've done a lot of mods to. However, I know absolutely nothing about Hondas. I know that the D15B2 has about 95bhp but that's about it. (that def. needs to be bumped up a little) I've never had a honda. Any info. or pointers would be appreciated! Thanks!

Stock timing is 16deg BTDC, but you can advance to 18deg with 89 octane for a little more pep. As far as cylinder heads go, if you're willing to do a Mini-me swap.. you can use a D16Z6/y8 cylinder head. Do a search for Mini-me, there is a lot of information on this topic.
Any D series transmission will bolt up, but you're going to have to do a auto-manual conversion. I've never done it, but from what I understand its time consuming.
If you want a decent amount of power, and the motor has a lot of miles on it, I would recommend doing a DOHC or SOHC ZC swap. You can buy the full swaps with engine/tranny/ECU for pretty cheap. IMO it would be a lot cheaper than messing around with the old D15. Again, search the archives, there is a lot of helpful information out there.
Good luck and welcome to HT.

Your other option to the mini-me is to do the mpfi conversion and put a d16a6 or sohc zc cam in it. If you do the mpfi swap I would recomend using the d16z6 or y8 intake and fuel rail. I put the y8 intake on mine when I did the mpfi swap and it made a huge difference.
OK, and I'm guessing I can use the Search function to figure out what all of those number/letter combos mean? See that's the problem. I have no idea what a BR549 motor, or whatever it's called, actually is. I guess it's research time. Thanks for the info.

Well niether do we.
D16A6 = The engine from the 88-91 civic/crx Si, and sedan Ex
D16Z6 = 92-95 Civic Si and Civic Ex
D16Y8 (Y8) = 96-00 Civic Ex
SOHC ZC = Imported from japan. Almost the same engine as a d16a6, just a better camshaft
DOHC ZC = Also imported from japan/europe, 130 horsepower and a good engine.
Mini-me = When you take a non-vtec block (like the d16a6 block) and put a vtec head on it (like the z6 or y8 head).
MPFI swap = when you wire from 2 injectors to 4 injectors.
If you search, you will find all the answers to your questions.
EDIT: As far as the transmission. Ironically, if you search, there is tons of info how to convert from an automatic transmission to a manual one. I would suggest using a 90-91 civic/crx si transmission, shortest gearing = best acceleration.

i wouldn't waste time or money with trying to squeeze power out of a D15B2. any money you put into it (I/H/E, etc) will only bring it up to what a swap would give you stock, and the swap still has potential to go higher. you might be able to do it for between $500-$1500 (depending on engine/tranny) if you plan on doing alot of the work. even a stock D16A6 would be an improvement, and you might be able to find one for around $300. check around at salvage yards and engine importers. i'm sure there are some in your area. there are also online importers like hmotorsonline.com. D-series engines (D16xx) will bolt right in, B-series engines (B16xx, B18xx, etc.) will require aftermarket mounts. either will also require a MPFI conversion.
as far as the transmission shifting hard, Hondas do that. but if it's really hard, you can try adjusting the kickdown cable (the other cable attached to the throttle body that runs to the transmission). adjust it at the TB end, try a couple turns looser or tighter. tighter makes it shift later, looser shifts earlier. and it only needs alittle bit of adjustment. as an example, mine was about 5 turns too tight, and it wouldn't upshift at all. figure out where your shift points should be, and adjust accordingly. it should shift alittle smoother. a fluid change couldn't hurt either. use Honda fluid. it's not any more expensive, and is highly recommended.

Awesome! Thanks a lot for the wagon forum!! I'm thinking we'll just go ahead and do a D16A6 swap w/ a manual tranny. That seems to be our easiest and cheapest bet. Then I suppose we could go even further w/ the v tec heads and stuff. Well, I've been searching and finding a lot of info. You guys have been great! Thanks so much. If ya'll ever have any bodywork or customizing questions (fiberglassing, welding, metal forming, etc...) just let me know. I'm sure I'll be able to help you out.
