My buddy's GS-R (102K miles) is burning oil.

1,300 miles ago we changed the oil - now, he's two quarts low. Cam seal is good, and we think the rings are good (no blue smoke) but are there any other signs that the rings are worn (w/o physically looking at them)...no oil leaks anywhere, the engine bay is clean.

So we're thinking its the PCV or Valve seals...or something else that our inexperienced mechanic minds can't think of? I personally don't know why the valve seals would burn that much oil - the only way i can see oil burning is from oil leaking thru the seal into the combustion chamber...as for the PCV, if the valve is broken and stays open, then I can see that oil would burn excessively..but 2 quarts?

We tried to check the PCV valve by squeezing it and listening for the clicking sound (like the Helm's says to do) however, all three of us couldn't hear any discernable clicking sound. We also tried it on a 99 GS-R and we were unable to hear any clicking sound from the PCV as well...however, rpms did drop when the hose was squeezed on both cars...So..we're going to try replacing that tommorow...

As far as valve seals - could this even be the problem? how hard is this process? We don't have to pull the head correct? Do we have to remove the valve springs or does the Valve Guide Seal Remover reach inside the inner spring ?

 

go get a new pcv valve . i try to put one in my car every 10000miles

 

my car burns oil to i was told that it is the valve seals and valve guides...i compression tested, and the numbers were good all across..so it cant be the rings...
