OT: Track safety - watch your mirrors!
Hey with everyone ramping up for an exciting summer of lapping days, HPDEs and racing - it is important to remember to watch for others when you are out on the track (and on the street too of course...)
This is a good video to show what can happen in the blink of an eye.

sorry if it's a repost - but I thought it was a good thing to mention
be safe everyone!

I just shat myself imagining what that guy thought while shitting himself...
Is it just me or was that a straight away and the viper was perpendicular to the track
while passing
missing his front end by like an inch
To think that we all thought we had a close call in Chi-town during expo5

Yeah -- saw this on Supraforums the other day. One of our guys was out there that day as well with him in his Supra and his dad in his Elise.
Very very scary moment for all involved. Dangerous when you have cars of such differing speeds on the track at the same time.
Dangerous when the skill levels of people varies in a single session like that...
good thread on what happened: http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=438114

that was a close call .....He never saw the car coming or else I think he would of maneuvered and possibly caused contact or wrecked-
wow... that is some crazy chit. in the event that he had checked his mirrors, what could he have done? that guy was way out of control!!!

I wondered if the Viper video was going to make it into this forum.
The thread title says something about watching mirrors, so we'd better say for the Miata driver's sake that if you've slowed down and you are at the left at that point of the "straight" at VIR, you have probably resolved to surrender the line to faster cars, and you probably know the cars are back there.
At most high performance events, the slower car would stay on the line, but in advanced groups where passing is permitted anywhere, people will certainly quickly surrender the line rather than inconvenience a much faster car.
Having watched the video a few times, I still cannot resolve the video to my satisfaction. Around that point of the "straight" there is a kink, a slight bend to the right that can be taken at a fair rate of speed, even completely foot down with most cars.
There is also a bump there that can affect you adversely if you're slightly off line, and I can imagine that if you have changed your mind about taking that little kink all-out, then perhaps that uncertainty and lift is what went wrong.
In a big heavy car with a lot of horsepower, perhaps a lift there transferred so much weight that the car just became uncontrollable.
The Viper did escape unscathed, according to the people in RR Forum. It was apparently even seen in later sessions at that event.

Wow! Could not have been any closer. Probably had to change his shorts after that one. How did the Viper get so out of shape on a straight away?
