Need help separating tranny housing
I've removed every bolt in the housing except for one that requires a hex key. I still can't get the two pieces apart. Can someone tell me the trick to getting it apart easily? It's a Y21 tranny from a B16A.
Thanks!

all transmissions have a retaining clip under a hex plug at the very end of the tranny.
its internaly clamping, so you'll have to hold it open, while you pull the outter housing off...
let me see if i can get a pic.

seperating the housing of the transmission.. or trying to get it off the engine?

The tranny is out of the car, starter removed, VSS removed, all bolts removed.
So you're saying I just gotta hold that clip open while trying to pry it apart? (Thanks for the diagram)
I'll check my toolbox to see if I have any choice words left that I haven't already tried...

also check the side of the tranny, there are two bolts that have springs inside of them with a ball bearing and that will also keep it from coming out along with the retaining clip
When I did my first one, I ended up cutting the housing to pieces to get that bitch out. The housing was toast anyway so it dident matter I was only interested in saving the gears.
See my tranny post for pics of the destruction.
Anyhow yes that thing is a MAJOR PAIN in the ***!

Come to think of it, I think I used a long pair of needle nose pliers, as the snap ring pliers weren't working very well. Just use the outside of the nose and pry apart as far as you can. The snap ring pliers have little tips that fit in those holes and then you squeeze them together which in turn spreads the snap ring but it just didn't spread it far enough.
And also make sure to remove the shift detent ***** and springs, as mentioned.
I forgot to ask, but have you even got them seperated at all? The snap ring will keep them from becoming totally seperated but the case halves will still seperate about an 1", maybe less, before you get to the point where you have to mess with the snap ring.
I remember the Hondabond keeping the case halved glued together a little - I used a putty knife to sort of slice through the Hondabond before actually moving ahead with pulling them fully apart too.
Upon re-assembly, here is a tip: When you get the tranny halves back together as far as they can go and then you get that snap ring onto the countershaft bearing as far as it will go, you'll soon see that's it pretty hard to fully seat that ring in the countershaft bearing groove. So get it on as far as it will go - at this point, tension will be holding it in place. Turn the tranny over and drop it onto a piece of wood about 2-3" off the ground - instantly seats it.

Yes I took out the two spring bolts and bearings.
It won't separate at all, so I'll try cutting the HondaBond with a knife as you suggested. The snap ring was inside a port that I unscrewed with a 1/2 inch ratchet, there is also something right next to it that requires a large hex key, do I need to remove that too?
I won't be reassembling the tranny. I think the phantom grip came apart inside and cracked the housing. I just want to get it apart to inspect the damage and collect the good parts.
