Default Can I install a turbo kit and not boost?

Ok here's the deal. Len from Baranco Acura is rebuilding my motor right now.

( New pistons, rods, bearings, etc )

and well my turbo kit will arrive about the time the motor is ready to go back in.

He says it'd be a hell of a lot easier to install at one time, and I agreed.

but the problem is. I wanted to break in the new motor for about 200-500 miles before running any boost on there.

so here's my questions, can I put the turbo kit ( drag 3 kit btw ) installed on my car without boosting anything?

i was just in that situation and honestly its worth waiting 500 miles to put on your turbo kit, i only put 300 on before i put my kit on, but i had to drive 200 miles on it to get it tuned, but its possible for a turbo to be put on a car w/o boosting it, but the real question you should be asking yourself is:

Can i drive a fresh motor with a turbo kit on it and not get into boost??

Run low boost and drive like an old hag. Your breaking in the engine anyways. There is no need to get on it.

(Tell Len that Brandon from Hawaii says hello and #122 is almost finished and running again )

Reply is for the bolded above....looks to me like you do in fact need to get on it

But then again, it's your motor...you make the call of how to break it in. Just read all the info you can and make an informed decision.

not sure man if I where you I'll take the pipe going to the intake manifold off just to be on the safe side, because even if you don't step on it is there and is risk, that's just me I wont risk a new build engine for 500 miles. my advised will be take the pipe off or just turn the pipe to the side and put a filter on the TB.

i heard running the turbo with out the intake pipe on is hard on the turbo i broke my motor in with the turbo on and had no problems, if you drive around easy and stay in vacuum you will not have any problems.

staying in vacuum means not spooling up and boosting right?

damn that means shifting at what. 3500rpms. ( integra GSR )

i was thinking of maybe opening up the wastegate and only being able to boost a couple pounds. and then try to stay in vacuum. not sure .. argh

i'd just get a mbc and set your boost really low. you say you won't go into boost with your freshly built motor, but you probably will . i was in the exact same dilemma as you. i installed a turbo kit without a wastegate, and i swore to myself that i won't go into boost. next thing you know, i was ripping it to redline in 1st - 3rd gear and using my right foot as a boost controller.

Interal or external wastegate? if its internal just pop the acutator arm off the wastegate arm and let it do as it like then you wont get hardly any boost. I broke mine in with boost. Dont forget if you go to easy your rings wont seat.

I think this is a very bad way to do it, there's a chance he could step on the gas a little bit and overspin the turbo when it doesn't have any load on it.

you can take the srping out of your wastegate. Do not let the turbo free-spool. It is quite easy to drive daily and not get into boost.

Theres your solution right there. Just dont hit the throttle too hard. Its not difficult at all to do it, its the temptation to purposely mash it that youre going to have to fight back. Daily driving without boost is physically not difficult to do at all. Emotionally, another story

You sound like Dr. Phil, but you're talking about boost rather than bf cheating on gf's mamma's sister's cousin's husband.

hahaha, its not good to run with the charge pipe disconnected, you will overspool the turbo

if you are breaking that motor in you should not be reving too much past 3500 anyway i say run it off the spring at like 2 lbs of boost i dont that way if you do get antsy you wont do any damage

If you break your motor in like a little girl off boost not revving past 3500 you arn't going to get as good of ring seal as you could. Before I tore my motor down it had a little over 6K on it, compression was perfect with virtually no leakdown. Some hard 3/4 throttle fourth gear pulls, then let off the throttle and let the car decelerate on it's own to help seal up the rings. I pulled it apart to put in lower compression pistons, and I'm going to break it in the exact same way. We broke in b16sedan's motor on a Mustang Dyno with boost and he's put over a thousand miles on it in a handful of days and that car is seeing a lot of WOT and it's his daily driver, we have no doubts that the motor will last 50K easily.

"Light" break in is for people driving stock Corollas, not high performance turbo cars.

get a boost/vac guage stay in vaccum if you can and youll be fine, no worries on breaking in the motor with out the kit on just do it all at once. youll be fine.

a little boost wont hurt it. ive seen several cars broken in on the dyno to tell you the truth. if youre that worried about it then just pull the spring out of your wastegate and youre good to go.

Yep! I'd break in with boost as long as it's tuned.

yea that's the thing. once I get the kit on there with the newly built motor. I'm thinking about running it hard for a good 20-30 miles and then changing the oil.

Then I'll drive it up normally about 1 hr to mainstream ( tuning ) and get the turbo tuned.
