Most people who fully build there motor

ie. sleaved, pistons, rods, headwork, tranny work, fully built and boosted

how long did it take for your guys motor to be done, and did you have a shop do it, or you did the work yourself

 

I'd only had my car since last April (2004).

First phase
Headwork/turbo: ~2 weeks
.5mm bore/rods/pistons: 5 days

Second phase
Currently happening:
sleeves/new rods/new pistons/tranny/many misc. parts: ~3 weeks

 

i say it took me 6-7 months for everything.

Had a shop do all the bottom end work

 

3 weeks for machine work and 1hr putting the block together. And about a day taking the old motor out, i like to take my time and do it right.

 

It took me 6 months total. Almost to the day!!

2-3 weeks machine work and I did the rest myself in a garage on jackstands.

 

as fast as i could get the money

 

took me 1 mth
i had to rely in waiting for parts in the mail, the block and head at the machine shop
and time to get my *** between work and family to built it and have it properly done

 

about a month and 5k. my built gsr head should be here at the end of this week... i did all of the labor myself.

...and about 8 months for me.

 

i'm going on 6 months right now, will prolly be done in august and about $7000 spent.

 

took me a little over a year would have been done sooner but decided to change my turbo setup in the middle of my build. most of the wait time was due to waiting on the machine shop to finish my block (RS machine) took atleast 2 months. did all the assembly myself and droped the motor in myself also. took about a total of about 2-3days

 

I'm still goin' strong right now. I pulled the motor out 3 weeks ago. I stripped the engine bay to the frame, cleaned it, cleaned everything that came out, did a wire tuck, and then put it all back. Now I'm in the process of building the motor. Just need a few more tools, but I'm scouring ebay for a dial bore gauge set.


I should have the new motor built and dropped in within the next 3 weeks. Then I'll start the welding on my ic piping and dp.


Oh, and I took a million pics of everything. I'm going to have a killer write-up when I'm done.

 

i had a shop to it in less than a week.... he had it for a while but i didnt give him the parts for 2 weeks.... and he finished it up in no time at all...

 

took me a couple weeks and about 12-13K for everything from start to finish..... the only thing I didnt do was the bottom end, I had a machine shop do that..

 

It doesn't take long if you know what you are doing.... I can build a motor in 1 day, 2 days if I'm building the head also, even if I take my time.... What is time consuming is waiting for parts to come in and the machine shop to finish their work...

 

From engine hoist to hoist it was about 10 weeks for me.

 

since my machine shop did my sleeving, and my engine was the first they have done, it took them a month for the sleeving and line honing. as for me, once i got all the parts in, it took me about a day to build the engine, less the 24 hours to get the correct head studs in, ordered the correct ones, jegs sent me ls studs, i needed b16 studs.

 

I was thinking about doing my first pistons and rods build. I'm not scared of doing it myself since I have a helms and have found a good amount of build articles, but I am scared that it will cost me more in tools then it will in labor charges for someone to do it. Not to steer too far off topic, but how much did you guys need to spend in tools? What tools are vital and which ones can I get away without? I don't want to buy a $500 engine lifter thingamajig (whatever it's called) and only use it once . Gimme some round about costs...Thanks

 

Just this week I spent the following:

$200 for a used 0-6" Mitutoyo micrometer set
$80 for a Summit ring filer
$50 for a proform bolt stretch gauge
$20 for a digital caliper
$150 for a Mitutoyo dial bore gauge

That's pretty much it. Everything was from ebay except the caliper (harbor freight).

The retail on all that stuff is over a grand, so ebay is your best bet. And you don't really need a full micrometer set, just a 2-3" and a 3-4".
