Default Vtec engaging later?

just receintly, it seems that my 2nd gen b16, the vtec isnt engaging until after 6000 on my tach and it seems the fuel cut off is a little lower than it used to be. i know the oil is full and everything is good that way. vtec still engages and pulls nice, it just worries me that its engaging so late... when i first put teh motor in the car it was engaging at 6000RPM on the tach but now its not till like 6500...

the tach i have in the car is a stock EX cluster with the tach and i know they can be off a bit, but i dont think it can be off 1000 rpm . when the car is idiling it idles under 1000 rpm and seems normal. any ideas would be appreciated.

oh yeah
car is a 93 cx, motor swap done about 2500 km ago as well.

u might wanna check ur settings on ur flux capacitor.
that may be engaging ur vtec later due to the settings,
u might want to change ur setting so that the vtec engauges earlier.

nope definatly a difference. and i can hear it engage and it still engages and sounds the same, just engaging at a higher rpm than it used to. im thinking it might have something to do with oil pressure or vtec silinoid (sp)?

bump, another thing is i just replaced my ignitor in my OBD1 b16 with 1 from an OBD0 d16 from a CRX Si, but it worked fine for a week after that, then it started engaging at a higher rpm and the fuelcut is a little bit lower

I can't offer much - but here goes. I'm not sure how accurate a VAFC really is anyways. I'm pretty sure it tells you when the solenoid receives the 12V signal -- it's probably a few fractions of a second behind. Anyone have any more information on this? I'm a bit curious myself.

Anyways, If you're too cheap to buy a VAFC, try getting a multimeter or hooking up some kind of light to the 12V lead at the solenoid. That'll give you some kind of idea.

My $.02

dont be a dick. if you cant help with a legitamate question dont post.

check your oil level, vtec works on oil pressure, if you are low on oil you may not be building enough pressure till 6000-6500 to engage vtec.

oil is full for sure. checked it this morning before i went to work. is there anything that would cause my oil pressure to not reach the correct pressure till that high RPM?
as for the "joke" im over that but think of it this way. if ur car was acting funny and u asked a question and somebody came back saying something retarded like "its ur flux capacitor", how would u feel? no hard feelins tho

This might sound stupid but how long has it been since your last oil change. If the filter is not clean it will actually make your pressure lower... I would reccmend changing the oil and filter and also taking off the solenoid and cleaning the screen. Is vtec engaging almost like a spudder not just at once but like spuddering and then engaging cause that is a sure sign of not enough oil pressure also is it engaging funny upon heavy cornering. if it is doing any of these things just change the filter with a good one ie mobil 1 or hamp or something like that and clean the screen. if not that then it is the solenoid itself or ecu or wiring issues but most likely the oil.

is your oilpan dented? could be dented just enough to block part of the oil pickup

oil pan isnt dented, the oil has about 3000 km on it and its a honda oil filter. im doing oil change in the next week to make sure. also does anybody have a link on how to clean the Vtec silinoid screen on a DOHC? ive never done it before and not sure how to do it.

thanks for all the input tho

it may just be the tach is that off. the honda tachs are junk. although that doesn't mean go buy a 8" auto meter tach

I have a shift lite only, if you had one of these you could put the pin in that is the same rpm as you vtec engagement. if vtec engages when the lite comes on, there is no problem. but in reality a vfac would do a lot more for you.

also, I reccomend to only use oem Honda oil filters as they are designed for Hondas and we have found they work the best. I seen to many aftermarkets leak... fram etc...

good luck with everything, sounds like the motors still strong. thats always a plus!
