if the cat is clotted, you can feel the heat if you put your finger down the shifter, that thing will turn orange in no time

Unless it's 100% clogged, you will NOT notice any difference at low rpms. A partially clogged converter will act as if you were asking your exhaust to pass thru a 1" Briggs & Stratton lawnmower muffler. There would be an increasing loss of power as the rpms' rose, typically not rising over 4000rpm; as the converter could not pass any more volume.
