Not only that, they probably charged you extra for the priviledge!
The NTB on Eisenhower in Alexandria got a little creative with the bill for mounting up my Azenis on the stock CM rims.
Charged EXTRA for MOUNTING, and then for the balancing as well somewhere to the tune of ~85$.
Then ... they were asking me if those were "drag radial", with the implied threat that they wouldn't do it if they were.
The counter person blamed it on the Manager that Sunday morning.
... now about the splitter...

Umm, just request that they use a machine that won't touch/damage the lip of the wheel. This topic has been covered several times. Most tire shops have equipment to do this, **** even with a little extra care you can use the normal tire machines without scratching the wheels if your careful but apparently the shops you guys use are just in a hurry and don't care.

i'd find a shop that sells good rims, like a performance place or something. Any place that's used to selling bling blings tends to know how to NOT screw up rims...

It would be very expensive to scratch a 20" rhym

This happened to mine as well. They left little chips of paint out of the lip. I think it is where they removed the wheel weights, I always get mine mounted inside, but for some reason Honda puts them on the out side of the rim....The scrapes look shitty, but only noticable if you get down and look for them.
When I got the R it had the weight mounted on the outside the first set of tires I got I had them put then on the inside, but yeah the rims were chipped, so I sent them to a machine shop to powder coat them again. Now they look good....
I think they should pay for repair or buy you new ones! I had my Azenis put on Sat and I made them guarantee that if they scratched any of them they would have to replace it. When he agreed to my terms, he looked at me and said your total now is $94.83 with a grin. I was more than happy to shell that out just for the peace of mind!
When I got my tires replaced on my R, there were scratches where the weighs were. At the time, didn't bother me. Then the chip started to get bigger, so I took my car to the dealer and told them how I thought Honda was stupid for putting the weights on the outside of a painted wheel. The next week, the area manager came to town and the dealer called me and he looked at my wheels and told me I would have four new rims in by the end of the week. Since then........I have never had the weights put on the outside again.
in order to avoid fubar'ed lips, I take the wheels off at home and just drop them off with the tires for mounting or rebalancing. It's more work for me, but that way some guy doesn't drive the car into the ramp or doesn't impact gun the lut nuts on.

OT: What is the term used to balance wheels/tires using the weights on the inside of the wheel? Is it 'static balancing'? Thanks.
dynamic balancing is when they balance the wheel/tire assembly with weights on both the inner and outter side of within the wheel. Static Balancing is when they balance the wheel/tire assembly with weights on only the center within the wheel.
when i got my kumhos i had perfect gsr rims the blade ones, brand new had just traded them for my Ls wheels and discount tire scratched them but what can you do, they were small of course but i'm a perfectionist when it comes to my car
dido , im so damn **** about every scratch
they didnt kill my rotas too bad just little scratches on the inside of the lips..

This happened to me also when I had my ITR wheels on the car.
The morons at the tire shop obviously couldn't tell that the painted finish on the wheel was rather fragile so they decided to put my wheels on the 'cheap' tire mounting machine.
Had to wait 3 months+ for the repair shop to re-finish 2 of my wheels because they were so backed up with other orders.
Now they're up for sale.

Butchered, yup, me too. First time I had a flat fixed. Rolled out with 6 chips in the paint. After almost two years of driving those have been the only chips yet to the wheels.
Since then I always have a personal discussion with the manager or whoever I can get ahold and tell them that these wheels chip very easily and that I want them to do their work very nicely otherwise I won't come back. You could also ask before you go to have tires mounted or repaired "Can you do this without chipping my wheels?" If they can't and answer no, just go to another place.
Anyway America's Tire Co. here on Bristol St. in Costa Mesa (SoCal) does a very good job. Manager is Carlos I beleive, nice guy, my wheels always come out looking flawless.
