Default Tranny problem - hard to get into gear?

Just recently, I been having problems shifting into gear.. there would be days where i would get it into gear no problem, every other day, shifting into gear would need some force, just doesnt feel right. It also happens sometimes when ive been driving for a while and the car/shifter begins to get hot. I'm not sure what exactly is causing this, lack of transmission fluid? need a new shifter? defective shift fork? anyone got any imput? Thanks.

this happened to me a while back. it was hard to shift into gears. it turned out that my clutch was ******* up. the thing that was holding the spring broke off.

Sometimes my Accord is hard to get into 1st, and reverse. What I'll always do in the morning when I'm leaving for work.. I'll throw it in 1st, and then put it into reverse, that always seems to get it in a lot easier.

Check your tranny fluid. Visually inspect the linkage and clutch and see if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

its more then likely your clutch springs are loosen or about to bust.....but you can try to change tranny fluid and see...but im 90% sure its your clutch springs that about to break.....

Since I have had a multitude of transmission problems since I have been in the game...whenever I had a hard time going into gear, it was usually due to my synchro's starting to get ground up. I frequently spend time in the upper rpm ranges, and love to shift hard and quick...synchro's generally don't like that. I have also heard of the shift fork inside the transmission cracking and breaking (happened on my Accord) causing nothing to go into gear. Low fluid levels will also cause the tranny to be a bit more stubborn to go into gear since metal on metal contact will provide an increased amount of resistance (go figure huh!?). I also noticed that whenever a piece of metal near your marcel springs starts to break/crack off, it will cause your car to not want to go into gear, and once it is in, it will want to stay in gear. Very bad when you are shifting at high rpm's. I would also check for slop in the linkage. Adding some washers to your shift lever (underneath it) will tighten things up a bit as well as Energy Suspension shifter stabilizer bushings. Hope all this helps...start small then work your way up.

it's the clutch man. better change it before you get stranded somewhere. while you're at it, change your main seal too

All the clutch does is mate the flywheel and tranny together through the pressure plate when you are in gear and the clutch pedal is out. If he is having a problem getting into gear, he probably has bad wear on his synchro's, a shift linkage problem (sloppiness), or a gear selector problem (I believe shift fork is the word I am looking for). The only time a clutch will cause you to have a hard time to go into gear, is if it is not disengaging properly...i.e. a piece of it has broken off and become wedged in such a manner that it engages the flywheel and tranny together. This happened to me twice now (once in a friends car), and the car is basically not driveable in this state. I couldn't drive my friends car, mine had to be started in 1st gear, and it would roll as I started it...it had to be shifted gently...as in rev-matched to the next gear.

Is your car hard to get into gear while parked and the motor off? Does it grind when you shift...at any rpm?

no, when the car is parked with the motor off, it is easy to get into gear. However, it makes more of a louder noise when putting it into gear with engine off, like a clicky noise...also, i have trouble putting it into gear at any Rpm...when the car is on.. i had my car parked for 2 days.. and when i backed the car up today i also found a small puddle of transmission fluid.. hmm

It makes the clicking noise since your gear cluster isn't spinning
to speed...sort of like grinding while sitting still.

You saw tranny fluid (hopefully 10W-30 oil actually)...yeah...pull your VSS and look down into the hole (should be a 10mm bolt holding it in on the backside of your tranny) and see if you can see where the oil level is at. Usually you can see a little bit at the very top.

the oil level is good, i don't believe its a fluid problem, at this stage i believe the clutch/shift-fork/linkage is bad.. one or the other.
