Just bought a car with a blown motor and broken axles..O.k. with the wheel off and the rotor screws impacted on. I grab the wheel studs and move it up and down and the rotor moves about a cm up and down... the control arms stay in place though? is it the Hub or what the frick?

 

Is there "scratching" like metal against metal? Or does it move smoothly? Smoothly would be something like worn out ball joints and the entire assembly wobbles up and down. But a beaten to death hub or stripped bolt holes in the suspension setup would make it scrape as you moved it up or down.
