ls/vtec qustion
i know many people have written about th reliabilty of ls/tec engines. my ls has 120,000 miles. do you guys think it will blow up if i ls/vtec it with out replacing anything in the bottom end. i dont plan on reving past 7000? if not how many miles do u think ill get out of it before somthing goes?
replace the pistons too. 11:1+ compression > 9.2:1. as far as the rest of the bottom end goes, your stock internals will do fine up til 8000. a friend of mine has a 91 ls with a chipped ecu and he runs it up to 8000 with no problems. and he has 100k+ on it. plus the fact that your engine will be making its most usable power above 7000 anyway. good luck with the conversion; tell us how it goes after its done.

exactly. even if you do stay in vtec while upshifting at 7000, your car is going to pull much harder 7000-8000. that is where all the hp is. and the peak torque might be above 7000 as well; someone correct me if im wrong.
well, low miles is always better. BUT, my 126,000 LS runs mint, with perfect compression across the board, and pretty good leakage test results. i am contemplating on doing the conversion to my car; not because of reliability/longevity, but because of my future financial situation.
well would i just be better of spending that money on stuff like a throttle body and a intake manifold with venom fuel ril and some crower stage 1 cams? im already running a 55 shot of zex. just lookin to hit like 180 whp with out my nitrous
you will NEVAR hit 180 whp on an N/A LS. and no, dont buy the manifold. TB and IM will give you like 5-10 whp, and cost you 6-700 bucks. i say go with lsvtec if your engine is in very good running condition. you will hit well over 180 whp on a well tuned lsv with bolt ons and type r internals.
I would say go ahead and freshen up the bottom end.But then it all depends on if you want reliability or you just wanna say hey i got an ls/vtec under the hood. Just do it right the first time and save yourself some money. just my opinion.Good luck.
yea i would agree with do it right the first time. i spun a bearing in my ls and then i didnt turn the cranck when i replaced the bearings, and blew a big hole in the block, now i cant do ls vtec. so it will cost me for a whold new engine. so yea i would get the pistions and new bearings if you are going to be reving high
