Big Weekend For The GSR
So I had this monumental list of **** I needed to do to the car, and it wasn't getting any smaller. A friend of mine decided to come up for the weekend so we could do some suspension swaps on our Cobras. I figured we could get some crap done on the race car as well. On Saturday Misa (SOHCkordVTEC) and Chris (not from this board) came up as well. Those 2 guys busted their asses while my friend Josh and I worked on the Mustangs. Here is what got accomplished this weekend:
- Suspension swap between 2 Mustangs (shocks, springs, CC plates)
- Installed MSD 6AL with cap and Blaster Coil (my non-revving V8 *** even had an 8k chip for the limiter)
- Cage removed from the GSR
- All the sound absorbing crap removed
- Interior was painted
- Door panels removed and switch panels relocated
- All upper plastic and headliner removed
- Sunroof removed, hole filled
- Cage reinstalled
- Timing belt/Water pump/tensioner replaced
All in all I think I shaved about 80-90lbs out of the car. I didn't take my camera to the garage so I couldn't get any pics but I will get some tomorrow night (for those who care). The window net and rollbar padding *should* be here tomorrow so that will go in as well. Once that stuff is in the only thing left is the seat/brace and the kill switch. The list is getting smaller!

Too bad I couldnt make it down there. Im sure we'll get other opportunities. Chris is on the board. His name is "Ceeveek", he has a total of 11 posts, all of which came tonight I think.
Here are some pics:
The new helmet - light as ****.
Painted back-half free of sound-absorbing crap
The pimpy roof panel (primered but not yet painted)
Roof panel from the inside
Hella tite grip tape. I opted to leave the padding on the firewall and the goop on the tunnel to try and reduce some in-car temperatures.

1. Your spray paint job appears to have come out better, or at least shinier, than mine did. What did you use? I used Plasti-Kote from Auto Zone.
2. I'll be paying a lot of attention to your pimpy roof panel.
3. What did you do with your window controls - or have you not gotten that far yet?

1. Krylon Gloss White over a coat of Rustoleum flat white sealer
2. The panel came out much better than anticipated. I think I have a total of $35 invested in the materials. My only concern was wind buffeting at high speeds. I got it up to 95MPH last night and the panel didn't flap at all so it may not be a problem. The big thing I like about how I did it is that I drilled no holes in the actual roof of the car.
3. The window controls are mounted to the existing brackets that held the door panel on. If you remember the door pull handle/pocket screws to a bracket. I simply screwed the switches to that bracket. The driver's side required an additional piece of metal to keep it from swinging out towards the driver's seat. I used exhaust/stereo band for this. I will send pics of it to you tonight.
Cobra - Who still has an assload of stuff to do also

I see that. But, if the glass is in place and you get t-boned all that window glass is gonna fly all over the driver area. A door panel will help contain the broken glass to the door.
I know the GCR requires door to be completely gutted (so, to remove the panel, the glass must also be removed).

I don't know about the NASA rules but, for Improved Touring, you can remove the drivers door panel only if you have NASCAR door bars as part of your cage and the window removed. You're not allowed to remove the passenger side window and can only remove the door panel if you replace it with .060" aluminum.
You will need something in place to keep the glass from covering the driver in case of an incident in the driver's door. The aforementioned aluminum panel would work just fine.
