How often do you guys change your air filters? I have an AEM CAI and I've been using the filter that came with it for about 7-8k miles and I'm wondering if I'm in diehard need of getting a new one? What would be a good replacement, K&N?

 

an AEM replacement would be best .. I think it has a speicif longer shape than one for say a short ram.

 

Well for me, I was using my old one until alot of debris were on the air filter and then i just bought one of the K&N air filter style from ebay, but It's a good idea to go for K&N air filter. It's still performance air filter.

it really depends on how you drive the car and the condition.

i would check and dust off my air filter everything i do a oil change(aem/k&N), they also have a recharge kit(wash, clean and re oil)

 

Just clean it...

 

K&N filters are meant to be cleaned and not just thrown away. This is from thier website: "K&N Lifetime air filters feature High-Flow Technology to help your car breathe easier, giving you the power you crave without breaking the bank - and because K&N is a Lifetime filter, it never needs to be replaced<U></U>. The money you save not having to change disposable paper filters is working for you to buy horsepower."

Here's what they say about cleaning them: "The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage."

So don't waste your money like other's have and throw it away. Also I think that I only paid around $10 for a recharge kit that you can use multiple times. I could be wrong on the price it has been a while but it can't be much more.

and you can but the kit at most auto parts stores and i think it is around $20 here...

thats the worst advice ever....you need to clean it, not get a new one. the K&N filter kit will work on most cone style (non paper) filters....reminds me i NEED to clean mine...BADLY

What he said. BUT.... it is a proven fact that K&N filters perform better when they are a "little" dirty

 

Dont real AEM intakes come with K&N filters anyways?

 

Yes they do. The old one's say K&N on them and the new ones say AEM.

 

I had K&n on my cars and they caused the gas mileage to drop. If they were so great why wouldnt any car maker including honda put them in there car? Honda and others have high quality OEM parts from the factory so i doubt its a penny pimching issue.
I read a scinentific study that showed the K&N filters actually allowed more dirt to enter the engine. You cant get more air flow without allowing more dirt in. Besides, the car is designed to run best with a regular paper air filter.

 

The reason that they don't put higher quality parts on the car is for price reasons. Why don't they put higher quality leather plastics ect.....All for the one main reason of saving money for the consumer. I doubt anybody would want to spent 40 grand for a civic.

 

Its not a cost cutting move if so cars would not come with bose stereos, My car has a clarion Cd casseete player from the factory.Why didnt they put an audiovox in there? How about the tires i dont see any Kumhos coming on any car except KIA's.

Dont you think Honda,GM ,Ford or any other manufacuter would add a k&N filters if they could add 2-3 mpg just by a simple $40 filter change?

Right now the best honda can do is about 36-38 mpg with the civic auto trans.So they could claim 40 mpg with a K&N, yeah right. People are buying new cars nowdays beucase of gas prices they are willing to pay an extra $5000 for a hybrid why not $40 for a air filter. **** Gm is closing there SUV plant Due to lack of demand caused by High Fuel prices so i doubt its a cost cutting measure. I could save the plant if I told them about the K&N.. Ill make the call today and save a 1000 jobs.

Damn, I've been using the same intake for 2-3 yrs now without changing it. I wonder if that's why my engine's oil is always black and am losing mpg.

Uhhh probably.

If you don't have a cleanable filter replace your current one with a cleanable one. It will pay for itself the 2nd time you use it.

Exactly...but it should be right around 6-8K miles. Mine will be different than yours because of where I live and how I drive.
