That sounds like your Fuel Relay, cost a bomb to replace from honda, but can be repaired with solder. This happened to 2 or my cars and both it was fuel relay. it was a honda technincian who told me about the fault and he managed to repair both with solder as he is a friend.
hope this helps

Yeh that sounds exactly like Fuel Relay or Distrubtor, when you turn the ignition on you should here the fuel pump, if you don't here this then it is definatley fuel relay, if you do here the pump and it wont start then it will be distributor. This is assuming your plugs, leads, distributor rotor arm and cap are fine.
Fuel relay is located under the dash, in the UK (Right hand drive) it is under the driver side dash where the bonnet pull is, never seen a left hand drive but should think it is exactly the same.
you can never tell when timing belt is going to snap unless u pull the rocker cover off to see if it has begun to split!!!!

Then it will be distributor, they go around 100,000 mile dont know what that would be in kilometers.
Personally i think it is distributor if you hear fuel pump and it dont start. You will have to buy a recon or new distributor as the bearigs inside them go. i got mine imported from America through Distributor King.
Both would be a quick fix and cheap if you go to a Honda specialist.

not much goes wrong on these engine, distributor is the only guaranteed part to go wrong, the symptons say to me distributor, the way i tested mine was borrowed the dizzy off a mates car and tried it on mine. Otherwise you would have to take it to a garage.

pretty sure it has to do with the fuel, full the rail and check if the injectors are firing. Could be a leak in the fuel return, injector leak?

Just keep an eye on your check engine light. Next time you drive the car or this happens make sure to listen for that. It sounds like the Main Relay (what he is referring to as Fuel Relay) and not the distributor. Are you having problems with it on days when it is rather hot outside. Make sure you can always hear the sound again when it doesn't start.

smell fuel? i hope your not smelling it out of the gas cap?
If your smelling fuel..you got a leak and that can cause your engine to stall from lack of fuel psi.

If you smell gas that means it isn't gettin burned, hondas got dual relay. The first relay powers up the computer and supplies power for the second relay. Once the computer is powered up, it will ground the second relay, which supplies power to the fuel pump. So if you can hear your fuel pump prime, you can eliminate the main relay/fuelpump/fuel relay problems.
It sounds more to me like a bad map sensor since you're saying it starts and eventually dies. ALso since you're smelling fuel, it prolly isn'y being burned due to spark problems. Try cranking it again then give it some gas. If it still doesn't start, pull the plugs see if its fuel fouled and trace it back from there.

You will never be able to tell if the distributor is the problem by looking inside it. It is the bearings that go, these are located inside the rotating shaft, these wear and then oil enters all the electrics. Mine used to start up and then die when i had distributor problem, it got to a point also when it never started. I changed the coil pack inside the distributor and it worked fine for a while, then that coil got damaged by the oil, eventually i just brought a new distributor and it worked fine.
as you say you smell fuel then i would get that checked first before being sure about distributor.
do you have a dohc vtec??

that musta been some serious flooding to jump the timing belt a tooth..unless your belt was loose in the first place and jumped in the beginning.
Good news its fixed
