header modification /general stainless steel welding question
I have a 97 ex coupe with a jdm type r motor. I bought a header from ssautochrome recently which is stainless steel. I need some help on some ideas on how to install it. I have tanabe racing medalion exhaust, and I'm assuming a usa cat. The stock manifold that is on the car right now has about a 4 inch piece welded before the flange on the header. How should I install this header. It has a 2.5" collector, and will have a gap and I will not be able to directly bolt it on. It did however come with a 4" piece of flex to weld in. The problem is that nobody has a tig welder here, and if I put the piece of flex in it is too long i.e. I will have to get rid of my cat and put a piece of straight pipe in addition to the flex piece In place of my cat. Any ideas. Can I just weld it with a mig?
to the worthless comment. ok for the question. Go to a local muffler shop and have them make a test pipe from your header to your exhaust with the flex in it. or you can get yourself a roll of stainless wire and a bottle or tri mix gas and you can weld the stainless to mildsteel with your mig welder
A guy at a local shop offered to weld the stainless with a mig welder. He said it would hold fine, just that the weld may rust over time and not look as pretty as a tig weld. He has the gas for the mig. So will mig welding on a stainless part hold or should I try to get someone to tig it for me?
