Your kidding me right? Well not to be an *** or anything, but the missing part your taking about is the Stock airbox. So instead the previous owner bought a Cold Air intake instead. Hope that helps

That's what looks like a D motor...the new K-series motors (civic SI/rsx) mount the reverse way. The intake manifold is in the front, so some of the new cai's for them end up near the rear drivers side of the engine bay.
Some like the aem V2 are easily seen, depends on brand.

do you know if you can modify the bypass valve at all to fit, without comprimising the effectiveness of it?

No, there is nothing wrong with that picture, like MOST cars the intake manifold on K series cars mounts near the radiator. While the exhaust manifold mounts closer to...you guessed it, the exhaust. It's a space saving design

LOL, This is the funniest **** i've seen in a long time. How can you compare two different engines? Thats why they make mods for specific cars. Thats how a CAI looks on an RSX. The short ram inake is the one that goes in the same place as the stock air box.

To my knowledge no, nobody has made it work. IMO i think if you got stubborn enough you can make it fit along the main intake pipe somewhere. It would have to involve cutting though. I dunno though. Space down there is real tight.
