ok I was going to do an intake manifold swap{y7 to a y8}. I ran into problems when I noticed that I had to make my injector wires longer and also some lines longer. I figured that I would ask a friend of mine what to do. so I put the y7 manifold back on made sure every thing was put back together and then I started the car.

soon as I turned on the car it was idling way high and then it started to surge. up and down went the rpm's. know mind you I can see the rpm level cause I have a 99 dx. so I called up a friend steven and he said that it might be my throttle body gasket, cause I never changed it and I just put it back on. he also told me that I have a gasket leak. my question is will this surging thing go away once I change the gasket or is it something eles. oh I also replaced the manifold gasket. And I also looked inside my manifold and there is some condensation or some kind of liqiud. can anybody help me please.

If its not a bad Gasket it could be the IACV is loose? thats what happened when i test drove my car after manifold swap? hmmmm awwwright! good luck

 

ok so I have replaced my tb gasket and manifold gasket checked for leaks I also retighten the manifold in the pattern the book showed me I started up my car and it did the same thing. I am lost and I am about to say **** it trash the motor and get a ex motor. does any one have on for sale.

 

have you checked all your vacuum lines on the IM?

 

yes I checked them. so now what do I just trash that motor?

By chance, did you remove your negative cable from the battery when you were working on the car before this problem started?

If I remove the neg. cable on my 94CX, I will get surging at idle (after it warms up) for a few days. The reason is the ECU has to re-learn it's custom closed loop fuel settings, and it can cause surging while idling.

If there is a vacuum leak, it will surge no matter what the temp of the car is though. I noticed you didn't really say weather or not you took the whole manifold off. If you did, you cannot re-use the manifold gasket because it won't crush properly (sealing any vacuum leaks). That could be your problem. If your swapping your manifold anyways, don't bother trying to fix this problem. You need new gaskets every time you take those things apart (or so the manual says)...

 

I took the whold maninfold off and I was about to put the new one on when I noticed my problems. so should I let the car warm up while its surging or not. and I didnt take the neg cable off while I was doing this.

 

In your case, I'm pretty sure you have a leaking manifold gasket. If all your vacuume lines are fine, and you replaced your T-Body gasket, then thats probably all thats left.

Did you remove the IAC valve from your manifold when you took it out? If so, that gasket could be bad now. It's pretty much a general rule that whenever you separate two parts that have a gasket between them, the gasket must be replaced (or it won't seal back up all the way)...

 

Don't forget about the air injection holes IF you are using a 99-00 y8 manifold. Those need to be jb welded shut. And on the back of the y8 manifold near the driverside at the bottom there is the cruise control nipple that also has to be jb welded shut.

 

Which IM gasket did you use? Y7 or Y8? I found that you need to use the IM gasket from the IM not the head. For example if you had a 96 civic DX with a 99 civic EX IM you need to use the 99 EX IM gasket, the Y7 will leak on a Y8 (found out the hard way.)

 

well I went to honda today and got a 99 dx im gasket cause I put the y7 manifold back on. and I also bought a new tb gasket. whe I went to honda today they gave me the right gasket but it was tore a bit the guy said that it would not make a difference. so he said that if still was messed up to come back and he would order me two im gaskets and two tb gaskets. I think I am going back in the morning. oh my other question is a guy on dragva told me not to use a 5speed y8 im cause I would have problem, and to use the auto im. is this true. so how can I tell if its an auto or a 5speed?
