I have a '92 EX. I recently poured a bottle of Octane Boost into my tank to address a slight pinging problem and today, with the temps over 80 the check Engine Light came on for the first time. Also, the temp was running pretty hot on the highway. Could the additive be the culprit? And if so, did I do harm, and how can I correct?

 

Why use a bandaid? Have your timing checked. A stock engine shouldnt be pinging if you use the appropriate grade fuel. What octane did you have in the tank, and is your timing correct?

 

Timing was done recently and is fine. Pinging has been coming on over the past year or so. The car does have 140,000. The Gas octane I have been using is 87. The worry now is the check Engine light. I am wondering if the additive is causing it, and if so if it is causing damage and how I can correct it.

 

Nasty carbon deposits in the cylinder head? Hot spots? Have you tried some seafoam?

 

I'm not worried about the pinging now. I am worried about the Check Engine light and whether it was caused by the Additive.

i seriously doubt it's the additive.most of those octane boosters only raise the octane one or two points(as in going from 87 to 87.2,not up to 89),if any.
what is the recommended octane grade for your car?have you tried running mid grade or premium?maybe recheck the timing,and even retard it a couple degrees as a temporary fix.
as said above,maybe carbon build up?Seafoam works wonders.

Ironic you added the Octane Booster and then get a fuel supply CEL. Anyone know how often fuel filters should be replaced? Mabe fuel pump is going, or clogged lines or a bad ground on the fuel pump?

Just throwing ideas out for you smart guys.

 

That's why I was wondering if it was caused by the additive. Maybe overloading the O Sensor. The Fuel Filter isn't too old, I do them kinda regularly. Other suggestions are possible

 

well check everything fuel related. I have used octance booster many times and never threw a code.....

 

If you were overloading the O2 sensor then you would get an O2 code. I believe that is a 1.
