Default charges for properly dumping oil?

i went to the local mechanic shop to dispose of my motor oil. they wanted to charge me some $$ just to throw away oil. All along i thought it was no charge to dispose oil. Luckily they let me dump there only this time.

How do you guys dispose your oil after an oil change?

it's free at autozone, kragen, and pepboys. I just went in and asked where they recycle the oil and they lead me to some huge bin..

I just drop mine off at the gas station. No questions asked no fees or signatures required.

A mechanic friend of mine told me that there is some sort of federal law that requires all places that sell/distribute oil to accept used oil for recycling. From what I'm hearing, that might be true.

-231, who needs to empty his garage of old oil, and this was a good reminder

In some states, when you buy oil, they have to accept used oil, in proper containers.

I take mine to the local dump - they recycle the oil and the used oil filters too. I like that!

That's lovely genius. 1 quart of oil pollutes half a million gallons of water. Why don't you just add it to your next glass of water and see how you like it.

And you wonder why tap water tastes like ***.
