for money purposes I'm sticking to d-series for the time being. however I want to do a mini-me swap. i have a how to and what not. but a friend and I are arguing about the effectiveness of this swap. i.e. a y8 head onto a y7? he said there's rod bearing issues. me I've never heard of any problems and it's the most effective way to gain 20hp. give advice suggestions. and for ***** and giggles, what's an estimate on say a full ls swap or b20 swap? not labor, just parts ?

he said the d-series engines have rod bearing issues in general. also mentioned some stuff about the stroke length difference between the y7 and y8

 

y7 and y8 have the same block. Only difference are the heads, and trannys.

just tell him u will put the gsr head on ur y7 block. he might agree on that.

maybe he was thinking that you are gonna put diff rod and piston from diff cars like the ls rod

 

A mini-me head swap should be as bullet proof as a stock Vtec D, which is tough as hell.

 

If you do it, you are going to end up damn near a normal 1.6 sohc vtec set up cost etc. by the time your done and it will not run as clean or as well as a z6 or y8 will. I'm saying if you just slap a head on and leave behing your old intake, exhaust etc. you will get very little from it and car will run with an odd powerband. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I HAVE DONE IT MULTIPLE TIMES&lt; The best way to go is a z6 block with a y8 head for power and flow durability etc.(if we are useing stock parts) the Y series block WILL spin or just wipe rod bearings more readily than the older blocks, but only if abused or run low on oil, they are just less forgiving, but usually a little quieter if taken care of properly. But just slapping a 1.6vtec head on a 1.5 block and rigging vtec to work makes most of these cars run worse to barely better. to get the most of it you need propper ecu, wired properly, intake, exhaust, injectors etc. otherwise it tend to not work as well. Head gasket selection is also critical.

ohh i see.. what makes him the expert ?
since my and many of my friends have done 200,000+ miles on Z6...
mine right now is 201875 miles
a D is no less or more capeble of eating the bearing then a B...
iv seen b´s do it in 80,000 miles... but i all so seen B with 250000 miles on it an runnning like NEW.. had all HP home + alittle more !

it ALL comes down 2 your treatment of you engine !. b OR d...

good olie, dont EVER NEVER hit the gas.. before 6 miles after startup..varm up is essantial for you engines life.. also NEVER run hot !!.. it is aluminium IT WILL not do as good with heat.. but if treahted right ! she will bee with you almost forever ! (and you can NOW giv it all she has all day long !) cooling 100% also a very importten factor.. and not engine related.. gearolie !!!!

 

ls or b20 swap will run you around 1k

 

since you're saying it won't run as well as a real y8, what do you recommend? that's the first I've heard that... And I take really good care of my current engine. but over 75% of them were lightly driven. Engine doesn't currently burn any oil either. I would like to do something to the engine to compliment my full suspension I'm putting on without doing a full engine swap right now. I can't afford to mess with putting a b-series in there right now

 

no one said it wont run as well, it will run fine....the y7 and the y8 have the same block, with the same displacement a mini-me would be like putting in a whole y8

and if your engine is in good condition strap on a homemade turbo setup for under a grand and your good to go
