Do Springs Wear Out?
I know the general feeling is "of course they do", which is why the suspension sags after the springs get old.
In my motorcycle days, both off road and street, the consensus there was that barring extreme heat, impact or anythig out of the ordinary, springs will hold their temper for the life of the spring... so essentially they never wear out.
I'm looking at installing some used H&R springs on my car soon... do I need to be concerned if they are "worn out"?
Opinions??

From attending the Eibach meet, I remember the tech's saying that springs don't sag, at least not good ones anyways. When your car settles at a lower height after a spring install, it's not because of the spring breaking in, but your bushings instead.
Yes, especially in Fords and Nissans and probably others. Think I'm joking
I have a co-worker with a Nissan Altima (96?) heard some loud noise come from his car at lunch, he limped it back to work then took it to the shop. Turns out his front spring broke. Yes, the coil spring on his car rusted, fatigued and completely snapped in two. The mechanic at the shop acted like he'd seen it several times before mostly on Fords, but had seen in on some other Nissans too.
I couldn't believe it, but after he got a ridiculous estimate I offered to help him replace the spring. Sure enough, it was broken in two.
I suspect similar weakening occurs on other cars. I know on my GSR there is some rust on the top of the OEM springs. I'm sure that isn't a good thing.

Jeff,
Yes I can see it breaking from rust, but my question was if the springs wear out due to repeated cycles, loses it's temper and changes it's spring rate.

Springs can and do wear. It really depends on the materials used, the design and how they are made. We offer a million mile warranty on our kits which covers "sagging" as long as they are purchased from an authorized dealer.

never knew that

Yes, that is very good to know.
So, has anyone ever returned springs to you under warrenty for sagging? That would be a true indicator of how often springs wear out.

It doesn`t happen very often. Everything we sell has been cycle tested for a million miles, or 750,000 cycles. Typically they have just added a sub box or additional weight to the rear of the car which is causing the sagging.

Yes, you are, of course, correct. I would think anyone buying springs would go with a well known company noted for quality. Why do it any way else, right?
BTW, I don't know if you remember me, but the red Honda Motorsports jacket you sold me a few years back is still my favorite. Let me know if you should ever get more of those in stock.
