does the tranny have to come off in order for the oil pan to be removed?

No, but the clutch cover will.

You will have to remove the header and possibly the flywheel cover if its in the way.

yeah you will have to remove the flywheel cover thing so you can get a socket into there to get to the oil pan bolts.
