Default D16z6 vs D16y8

What exactly are all the differences between the engine blocks on the two engines?

if i remember right there basicly the same blocks and the same heads, but i think the rocker arms are set differently and the combustion chamber is a tad bit smaller too, and the Y8 head will flow a lot more air then the Z6 can... but over all there basicly the same motor...

i thought the Z6 head flowed better.. and the y8 just had a larger plenum for the intake mani

Different blocks, different heads. Z6 head flows better, but has less compression, and the intake manifold has a smaller plenum. Y8 head doesn't flow as well, but has more compression, and the intake manifold is by far the best of the d-series. In the end the y8 makes a few more ponies, but you won't notice it.

As much as I want to recommend posting your question after performing another - basic - task... Basicly if comes down to what comes cheapest for you. Certainly, seek out the certain peices if your parting it together. Not that you couldn't sell a z6 mani to make up for buying a y8 mani and such. Basicly the y8 has a better combustion chamber (esp. for turbo, less chance for detonation). You could always have the z6 chamber welded, resurfaced, and machined. The only reason I went with a z6 is because a friend had it lying around for cheap.

So will a y8 manifold fit on the z6 head? If so will it matter in hp gains?

yes y8 manifold will fit
but stock for stock the y8 has 1-2 more hp........ but i mean that really doesnt matter, because every motor runs extremly different

Sorry for the noob question but is the Z6 head just the earlier Vtec head for the EX?

I always thought the blocks were the same, but some guy with a turbo z6 was telling me that his friend turboed a y8 with the same setup and his rod bearings went out right away on two seperate y8 blocks. Just curious if it's bs because my y8 is taking on turbo very soon.

Research y8 manifolds before put one on. They are diffrent from 96-98 and 99-00 and auto or manual. Some will have holes that will need to be plugged and require different gaskets.

Oh and dremel out the opening and use a bseries throttle body on the y8 mani. WoRd

I was curious about the B series throttle body. Does this directly bolt up to the intake manifold?

thanks

both are crap.

lol.

I've had both, busted both and now I have a frankenstein combo of both. yay! I rule. lol.

Seriously though, great motors and if you want to go boost, the Z6 is better.

Funny everyone is asking about this now. I am trying to figure out how everything goes together right now since I have begun doing this swap.

GSR throttle body and y8 manifold.

here are the main problems...
-you need a 96-00 fuel rail also
-also the fpr from the 96-00
-The hose at the top of the throttle body doesn't connect to gsr throttle body. I am going to connect it to a extra tube on the manifold and hope it works.
There is a sensor on the back of the manifold that has no place to go on the y8. I am going to try and drill out a spot for this on the manifold I think. Otherwise you have to solder extra wire so that it will reach the intake tube and have to cut holes anyways.

Aside from that I ported the **** out of it and cut off alot of exess material. Since the support bracket won't work I felt the need to lighten the manifold a bit and there is tons of extra meteriall on there. I am attempting to polish it sort of. Again just to take off weight if nothing else. I will post pictures tonight

trust me when i say this....if you are going turbo stick with a z6! I have had a boosted y8 for over a year and it blows headgaskets about every 2-4months. This is with a very conservative tune...11.5:1 afr straight across with only 18* total timing. I believe a lot of it has to do with timing. I just found out that the actual y8 timing maps run a full 10* less total timing than z6 maps. I run those maps in my car now and it actually runs great with a total timing of only 13*! The problem is that I just blew my headgasket again last night. I think that I switched to those timing maps too late.

Now I am tired of screwing around with y8's with boost. I am about to swap a z6 head onto this y8 block so I can run the p28 timing maps and have a pretty good idea of where the timing actually has to be rather than screwing around with the y8 timing. In my personal experience i have seen way more people blow y8 headgaskets than z6 headgaskets.

MShue, how much boost? What management? You will still want to make new maps, and use a camgear if you can. Timing will be different than a stock Z6.

And if your having head gaskets go out on you than I suggest machining the block.

I had the same setup and problems.
