Approx. how much to have my R12 AC system checked for leaks/refilled??
I need to have my AC (R12) checked for leaks and refilled. Last year, I replaced the compressor because I knew that it was bad (clutch was bad). The AC has not worked for over 5 years now and there was still freon in the system (very little) so I would imagine that there are not any leaks.
Any idea how much I should expect to pay to have this service performed??
Thanks,
Andy

Last time I had it done it was $60 IIRC. That was a few years ago, so may be a bit more these days. Since then I have topped mine of myself with a recharge kit from the parts store for about $20.

you have the r134 in your car not the r12...r12 is the older refrigerant. it's now expensive if you can find it. I believe any of the cars built 1994 and up had the new r134 stuff. You might have to do a conversion to r134 if you can't find anyone to fill up the r12.

We only charge 50 bucks at my work to do an a/c service plus refrigerant (r14a $30.00 a pound, r12 $50.00 a pound). A/C is expensive stuff to work on and very easy to mess up. Be carful make sure you take your car to a A/C shop take actully sells r12 not a replacement like freeze12 or r22.
im guessing with my 93 accord i have the old r12, so how many pounds would i need for a full recharge??? and to convert to a cheaper newer system, what would need to be replaced??? all a/c lines or just the compressor or...???

One time, I blew my ac line on the turbine housing so I had to replace it. For about a year or more, I left the line pretty much open, with the exception of a bit of tape covering it. Anyway, I finally got ahold of another line put it on, went to get it checked and refilled. It was about 120 bux for the test and the refill with the proper type of recharge. That was Canadian dollars by the way. You could prolly get it for a lot cheaper, but from what I heard that was a bit cheaper than what most places were charging, especially the honda dealership...but that's just common sense! haha
