Default steering rack

Does anyone know the correct way to adjust the slack out of a steering rack. Ive heard about 5 diff stories about how to do it and whats correct and whats not. I would really love to get this fixed. The slack is from side to side and in the box itself. You can grab either of the front wheels when the front end is on jackstands wiggle the wheel from left to right and hear it "clanking" inside the box.

Check to make sure the two U joints in the steering column are not worn out. One is #5, and the other is part of #1. Once they wear, they will cause excess play.

Also the tie rod ends might need to be tightened a little further down on their shafts. I'm not sure how much adjustability is in them on a Civic, but you can give it a try .

heres something i just did that helped imensely...my steering column itself was a bit shaky, you could grab the wheel and move it like 1/4" in all directions, didnt feel very solid at all, and it was getting on my nerves....anyways, i loosened #11, then pryed on the bottom of #1, to get the splines to slide further down into #5, once i had #1 forced down into #5 as far as i could, i retightened #11....it worked like a charm, id say for everyone that has even the slightest amt of sloppiness in thier steering, to try this, it was definitely worth it
